The curtained ladies' aversion has grown earnest,

And beauties' utmost is that their pledges earn reproach.

Now their eyes shield themselves from me behind their cheeks,

Though once their cheeks would fend me off with their eyes.

Though the gazelles have shied away from me, many a time

The farthest of them is close to my arrows.

In nights when no secluded maiden escaped my arrows,

However mighty her protector and numerous her people.

Whenever a coquettish woman shot at me, I shot at her

With an eye whose avenger exacted its redress from her.

A noble man is no victim of love when

Beauties' arrows sometimes hunt him, and he hunts them.

But love's true victim is he who remains

With a grievance against them for which he wins no redress.

May God water the days of tale-bearers, for they

Are the good days whose lucky stars were rising.

There I kept company with youth in its freshness,

While supple, fair-necked beauties vied for me.

    Is honey-sweet intimacy ever gathered

From fair women except where a tale-bearer plots against it?

The tale-bearer accompanies the lover; does any hand gather

The bees' honey except where bees drive it away?

Let folly appoint reason its successor in its dwellings,

When the black of the hair's partings gives way to white.

Indeed, the world holds many wonders,

And the strangest is that its newborn does not turn gray.

I see people swallowed by the earth, except that

They remain above ground: its soil has not overturned upon them.

Being swallowed up is not when a town's lowest parts meet

Its highest, but when its slaves come to rule.

Monstrous wrong has arisen among men, though the Lord is one,

As He ever was, while the clans' slaves are of many kinds.

Oh, would that a crier had cried against this people,

One cry, and their Thamud had claimed them as its own!

Who will vindicate me against a world whose strivers fail,

While its idlers win the most coveted fortunes?

I have looked: Time never ceases its trampling,

Its burning fierce upon the noble man's cheek.

But as for its favors to every worthless

Wretch, they come in succession, their increase never cut short.

I see every blessing clouded by a taint,

Save al-Khallal's good fortune—few envy it.

Yet he plainly scowls, as though he were

A newly bereaved mother whose losses follow one another.

That is only because a base soul

Is laden with blessings whose weight bends it down.

O you reclining on prosperity of which you are unworthy,

While those worthy of it are ruined, their fortunes asleep!

Do you awake prosperous and unharmed, while these

Proud chiefs of Banu al-Abbas go strutting?

I shall renounce the world, base as its name,

For, by God, only its paltry portion remains.

And declare enmity toward the days because of you.

Why should I not oppose them, when you are their fortunate one?

When the mighty are humbled in this world, and

Its lowly don might, and its subjects become rulers,

Then may no sky pour down its rain,

Nor earth grow lush, nor its branches turn green.

By my life, I have roused Hashim as much as I could,

To expose the disgraces—if only its sleepers would wake.
