بكاؤكُماyour weeping, both of you يشْفيsoothes وإنand even if كانit is لاnot يُجْديof use
فجُوداso give freely, you two فقدfor indeed أوْدَىhas perished نَظيركُمُاyour equal, both of you عنديto me
Your weeping soothes, though it avails nothing;
so give freely: one as dear as you to me has perished—
بُنَيَّmy little son الذيwhom أهْدَتْهُoffered him كَفَّايَmy two hands للثَّرَىto the earth
فَيَاso, oh عِزَّةَpreciousness المُهْدَىof the gift وياand oh حَسْرةanguish المُهدِيof the giver
my little son, whom my own hands offered to the earth.
Ah, how precious the gift, how bitter the giver's grief!
ألاah قاتَلmay destroy اللَّهُGod المناياthe fates ورَمْيَهاand their shooting
منfrom among القَوْمِthe people حَبَّاتthe kernels القُلوبof hearts علىwith عَمْدِdeliberate intent
May God strike down the fates and their shooting
deliberately at the very kernels of people's hearts!
تَوَخَّىtargeted حِمَامُthe doom الموتِof death أوْسَطَthe middle one صبْيَتيof my little children

فللهso, by God كيفَhow اخْتارit chose وَاسطَةَthe central jewel العِقْدِof the necklace
Death's doom singled out the middle one of my little children;
by God, how it chose the necklace's central jewel!

Just when I glimpsed promise in his glances
and discerned in his deeds a sign of sound judgment,
طَوَاهُfolded him away الرَّدَىdeath عنِّيfrom me فأضحَىand so became مَزَارُهُhis resting place
death folded him away from me, and his resting place became
far despite its nearness, near despite its distance.
لقدindeed أنْجَزَتْfulfilled فيهconcerning him المناياthe fates وعيدَهاtheir threat
وأخْلَفَتِand broke الآمالُhopes ماwhat كانthere had been منof وعْدِa promise
The fates indeed fulfilled their threat against him,
while hopes broke whatever promise they had made.
لقَدindeed قلَّwas brief بينbetween المهْدthe cradle واللَّحْدand the grave لُبْثُهُhis stay
فلمso he had not ينْسَforgotten عهْدَthe days of المهْدthe cradle إذwhen ضُمَّhe was enclosed فيin اللَّحْدِthe grave
Brief indeed was his stay between cradle and grave;
he had not forgotten the cradle when the grave enfolded him.
تَنَغَّصَwas spoiled قَبْلَbefore الرِّيِّquenching thirst ماءُthe water حَياتِهِof his life
وفُجِّعَand he was deprived منْهof it بالعُذُوبةof sweetness والبَرْدِand coolness
His life's water was spoiled before his thirst was quenched,
and he was robbed of its sweetness and coolness.

The bleeding beset him until it changed him
to saffron's yellow from the redness of the rose.
وظلَّand continued علىupon الأيْديthe hands تَساقطfalling away نَفْسُهhis soul
ويذوِيand he withers كماas يذويwithers القَضِيبُthe twig منof الرَّنْدِlaurel
In our hands his soul kept falling away,
and he withered as a laurel twig withers.
فَيَالكِso, what a ... you are منof نَفْسa soul تَسَاقَطfalling away أنْفُساًas many souls

Ah, what a soul, falling away soul by soul,
as pearls tumble from a string without a knot!

I marvel that my heart did not break for him,
even if it were harder than unyielding stone.

وأنand that المناياthe fates دُونَهُinstead of him صَمَدَتْhad aimed صَمْدِيat me
I wish I had been sent ahead before him,
and that the fates had aimed at me instead of him.
ولكنَّbut ربِّيmy Lord شاءَwilled غيرَother than مشيئتيmy will
وللرَّبِّand to the Lord belongs إمْضَاءُthe fulfillment المشيئةِof the will لاnot العَبْدِthe servant
But my Lord willed otherwise than I,
and it is the Lord, not the servant, whose will prevails.
وماand not سرنيpleased me أنthat بعْتُهُI sold him بثَوابِهfor his recompense

ولوand even if أنهit were التَّخْليدُeternal life فيin جنَّةِthe Garden الخُلْدِof Eternity

It would not please me to trade him for the reward of his loss,
even were it eternal life in the Garden of Eternity.
وَلاnor بِعْتُهُdid I sell him طَوْعاًwillingly ولكنْbut غُصِبْتهI was robbed of him

وليسand there is no علىagainst ظُلْمِthe injustice الحوادِثof calamities منany مُعْدِيgiver of redress
I did not sell him willingly: I was robbed of him,
and none can grant redress against calamity's injustice.

Though I may enjoy my two sons after him,
I shall remember him as long as aged she-camels moan in Najd.

Our children are like our limbs: whichever one
we lose brings grief, its absence all too plain.
لكلٍّfor each مكانٌa place لاnot يَسُدُّfills اخْتلالَهُits vacancy
مكانُthe place أخيهof his brother فيin جَزُوعٍone overcome by grief ولاnor جَلدِone steadfast
Each has a place whose emptiness cannot be filled
by his brother's place, in the anguished or the steadfast.
هَلِcan العَيْنُthe eye بَعْدَafter السَّمْعhearing تكْفِيsuffice for مكانهُits place
أمor السَّمْعُhearing بَعْدafter العيْنِthe eye يَهْدِيguide كماas تَهْديit guides
Can the eye, after hearing is lost, suffice in its place?
Or can hearing, after the eye is lost, guide as the eye does?
لَعَمْرِيby my life لقدindeed حالَتْhas changed بيَfor me الحالُmy condition بَعْدَهُafter him

By my life, my lot has changed since his departure;
would that I knew how his has changed since parting from me.
ثَكِلتُI lost سُرُوريmy joy كُلَّهall of it إذْwhen ثَكلتُهُI lost him

I lost all my joy when I lost him,
and turned away from the pleasures of my life.
أرَيْحَانَةَO sweet basil العَيْنَينِof the two eyes والأَنْفِand the nose والحَشاand the heart

ألاah لَيْتَif only شعريmy knowledge هَلْwhether تغيَّرْتَyou have changed عنfrom عهديmy recollection
O sweet basil of my eyes, my nose, and my heart,
ah, if only I knew: have you changed from what I remember?
سأسْقِيكَI shall water you ماءَthe water العيْنof the eye ماas long as أسْعَدَتْit lends aid بهwith it

I shall water you with tears as long as my eyes yield them,
though watering with tears avails nothing.
أعَيْنَيَّO my two eyes جُوداgive freely, you two ليto me فقدfor indeed جُدْتُI have given freely للثَّرىto the earth

O my eyes, be generous to me: I have given the earth
something more precious than the gift asked of you.
أعَيْنيَّO my two eyes إنif لاnot تُسْعِدانيyou two aid me أَلُمْكُمَاI shall blame you both

O my eyes, if you do not aid me, I shall blame you;
if you aid me today, you will earn my praise.
I would excuse you both لوif تُشْغَلانِyou two were distracted عنfrom البُكاweeping

I would excuse you if you were kept from weeping
by sleep—but what sleep has one worn out with grief?
أقُرَّةَO delight عينيof my eye قدْindeed أطَلْتyou have prolonged بُكاءهاits weeping

O delight of my eye, you have prolonged its weeping
and left it fuller of grit than inflamed eyes.
أقُرَّةَO delight عينيof my eye لوif فَدَىcould ransom الحَيُّa living person مَيِّتاًa dead person
فَدَيْتُكI would ransom you بالحَوْبَاءwith my soul أَوَّلَthe first منof those who يَفْدِيransom
O delight of my eye, if the living could ransom the dead,
I would ransom you with my soul, the first of all to do so.
كأنيas though I ماnot اسْتَمْتَعتُhad enjoyed منكof you بنظْرةa glimpse

or a kiss sweeter to taste than honey;
كأنيas though I ماnot استمتعتُhad enjoyed منكfrom you بِضَمَّةٍan embrace

ولاnor شمَّةٍa breath of scent فيin مَلْعبٍa play-place لكof yours أوor مَهْدِa cradle
as though I had never delighted in an embrace from you,
or your scent where you played, or in your cradle.
ألامُI am blamed لماfor what أُبْديI show عليكfor you منof الأسىsorrow
وإنيand indeed I لأخفيsurely conceal منهof it أضعافmany times ماwhat أُبْديI reveal

I am blamed for the sorrow I show for you,
though I conceal many times more than I reveal.
محمَّدُMuhammad ماno شيْءٌthing تُوُهِّمَwas imagined سَلْوةًa consolation
لقلبيَfor my heart إلاexcept that زادincreased قلبيmy heart منin الوجدِanguish
Muhammad, nothing thought to bring solace
to my heart has done anything but deepen its anguish.
أرىI see أخَوَيْكَyour two brothers الباقِيينِthe surviving two فإنماand so only
يَكُونانthey both are للأَحْزَانِfor sorrows أوْرَىmore apt to kindle منthan الزَّندِthe fire-stick
I see your two surviving brothers, and they only
kindle grief more readily than a fire-stick.
إذاwhen لَعِباthey both play فيin ملْعَبٍa play-place لكof yours لذَّعاthey both sear

When they play where you once played, they sear
my heart as fire would, without intending it.
فماso there is no فيهماin the two of them ليfor me سَلْوَةٌconsolation بَلْrather حَزَازَةٌa gnawing ache
يَهِيجانِهاthey both stir it دُونِيwithout me وأَشْقَىand I suffer بهاfrom it وحْديby myself
In them I find no solace, only a heartache
which they stir, not I, though I alone suffer it.

Though you have been left alone in an abode of desolation,
I, in the abode of fellowship, suffer a solitary's loneliness.
أودُّI wish إذاwhenever ماemphatic particle الموتُdeath أوْفَدَdispatches مَعْشَراًa company

I wish, whenever death sends forth a company
to the army of the dead, that I were among those sent.

And if one asks a loved one for a gift,
I ask for a phantom glimpse of you in sleep.
