    My people are the sons of al-Abbas; their forbearance

    Is mine, as you wish, and their rashness is mine.

    My arrows are their arrows whenever there comes

    Upon me hardship; and their arrows are mine.

    لفَّ الإلهُ بشملهم شملي

    I never seek anyone in their stead;

    May God bind my company to theirs.

    And whenever I come with them to their pools,

    They do not drink the clearest water before me.

    A people for whom kindness to me and honoring me have become

    A concern, while praising them is my concern.

    Those who bestow their bounties upon me,

    And praise every service I render.

    I am one of them by decree of him who was the seal

    Of God's messengers; and they are my kin.

    والرُّومُ حين تَنصُّني أصلي

    Their client, and nurtured by their bounty;

    And the Romans, when you trace my lineage, are my stock.

    The sages of humankind, its very best.

    Do you fault my origin—woe to you—or my distinction?

    ومتى رعيتهمُ فهُم سَهلي

    And whenever I seek refuge in them, they are my mountain;

    And whenever I seek pasture among them, they are my plain.

    ومتى أجرْتُ فحبلُهم حَبْلي

    And whenever I bestow gifts, their bounty is my gift;

    And whenever I grant protection, their rope is my rope.

    And whenever I call upon them in calamity,

    They care for me and never consider forsaking me.

    They give their blood in defense of mine,

    And I count my death in their defense a small thing.

    And when I go forth, their host my assembled force,

    Neither my cavalry nor my infantry can be overcome.

    O you who incline toward their enemy,

    You are no part of my earnestness or my jest.

    Whoever fails to see my sun when it rises—

    His blindness has already exacted my revenge for me.

    وكفاهُ من عذلِ امرئٍ عذلي

    His blindness suffices me as punishment for him;

    And my rebuke is all the censure he needs from any man.

    Let no bands of carrion ever hope

    That I will butcher their foul carcasses or eat them.

    I have held my blade too noble for their flesh,

    And I was made so that my blade knows where I strike.
