    Beware my fury—or wait and see, for surely

    A mass of torment, unleashed, looms over you.

    And never think that peace has stripped my weapon of its point,

    Nor that, in knowledge's truce, I am heedless.

    أُفَوّقُ نبلي تارة وأنصِّلُ

    But I muster all my forbearance, stirring up dust;

    I notch my arrows at times, and at others fit their heads.

    So if battle flares, or returns once more

    To its beginning, I shall not be found unarmed.

    بدائِهُ لا يخذُلنَني حينَ أعجلُ

    And after giving the pact its due, I have

    Extempore verses that do not fail me when I hurry;

    They bring me, at ease, to the far-distant goal,

    And carry me past what the unhurried man has put forth.
