ورضاًand favor أعزُّrarer منthan الغُرابِthe crow الأعصمِwhite-marked
Anger more persistent than the black raincloud,
and favor rarer than a white-marked crow.
لمnot يَبْقَremained منof أحدٍanyone أفاخرهُI boast before him بكمof you

There is no one to whom I boast of you
who did not see me yesterday treated without honor.
عمَّincluded everyone الأذينُthe doorkeeper بإذْنهwith his permission وتخلفتand was left behind
حاليmy case فلمso not أُذْكرI was mentioned ولمand not أتوهمِI was thought of
The doorkeeper admitted everyone, but left out
my case: I was neither mentioned nor thought of.
لكنْbut نُبذْتُI was cast aside معwith اللَّفيفِthe motley crowd بمَسْمعwithin earshot
وبمنظرٍand within sight للشَّامتينَof the gloaters ومَعْلمِand in a conspicuous place
But I was cast aside with the motley crowd, within earshot
and sight of the gloaters, openly exposed.
بلْrather ماnot أصابتنيbefell me هناكthere شماتةٌgloating
لكنْbut غُبِطْتُI was envied بأنَّنيbecause I لمnot ألطمِI was slapped
No, no gloating befell me there;
rather, I was envied for not being slapped.
وأشدُّand more grievous منthan ظُلمthe wronging الأذينِthe doorkeeper وسائليmy claims to favor
عِلْميmy knowing بظَنِّكَof your supposing أنَّنيthat I لمnot أُظْلمِI was wronged
And worse than the doorkeeper's slighting my claims
is knowing that you think I was not wronged.

Show me kindness, Abu al-Husayn, for I
have been among your loyal friends since long ago.

منof كلِّevery مُؤتنفٍnewcomer عليَّover me مُقدَّمِgiven precedence
I am one who sought you when your doorway stood empty
of every newcomer now preferred to me.

منfrom أنْthat يراكsee you المجدُGlory دافعَpaying مَغْرَمِa levy
I would shield you, O hope of your age,
from Glory seeing you pay a levy.
بلrather أنتَyou مُعْفىًexempt منfrom جميعall حوائجيmy needs
إلاexcept لقاءكmeeting you فيamid السوادthe multitude الأعظمِgreatest
Rather, you are exempt from all my needs
except meeting you amid the great throng.
لاnot أبتغيI seek ماwhat كنْتُI was آمُلُI hope for مرَّةًonce
حسْبيenough for me بوجهِكyour face فهوfor it is أفضلُthe best مَغْنمِprize
I do not seek what I once hoped for;
your face suffices me, for it is the finest prize.
بلrather أستقيلُكI ask you to let me retract لستَyou are not ممنamong those who يُبْتَغىis sought
منهُfrom him المودةُaffection باحتمالby bringing الدرهمِthe dirham
Rather, let me retract: you are not one
whose affection is sought by bringing a dirham.

أنthat يُجْتَدىhe be asked for gifts ولأسألنَّكand I shall surely ask you فاعلْمِso know
You are one whose favor is best won
by asking for gifts—and I shall ask you, be sure.
حسْبيenough for me جداكyour bounty إلىto هواكَyour love وسيلةًas a means
ستُحبُّنيyou will love me إنْif نِلْتُI obtain نَيْلَكَyour gifts فاسْلَمِso fare well
Your bounty suffices as my means to your love;
you will love me if I receive your gifts—so fare well.
