My face is too bashful to press you for what I need.

And if I stay silent, you forget—or pretend to forget.

And if I press my claim, you put me off and evade me.

So I meet with ill temper and obstinacy from you.

You have left me bare of all your hand’s bounty,

O you for whom I made praise a garment.

    And I think I shall set—and soon—

my self-respect and despair between me and you.

Relax your face in a smile, Abu al-Abbas,

for never once have I known you to scowl.

Tell your weariness that my soul is free:

It has forsaken people before it, and others besides.
