O you in whom, above all generous men, I place my hopes,

And whom my soul loves above every close friend.

I delayed my greeting to you out of aversion

To the crush of those who meet you to offer greetings.

And I remembered how you share your warm attention among them

When you meet, as every generous man does.

So I begrudged them that and wanted it

For myself alone, to their exclusion, with none to share it.

So I held back from you until their throng receded,

While my heart circled ceaselessly around you,

With the restraint of a man who gives affection its due,

Not the restraint of a base man whose loyalty deserves reproach.

And hastening to you after that is a duty,

And giving you your due must take precedence.

So pardon me—may mankind be your ransom—you are unchallenged

In goodness of nature, for yours is the finest nature.

And whenever you have misgivings about a crooked trait,

Then seek out that crookedness and set it straight.
