فتحتُI opened أبوابَgates مدحٍpraise لاno انغلاقَclosing لهاfor them
منfrom إخوةbrothers لكof yours جاؤواthey came بالأعاجيبِwith marvels
I have opened gates of praise that can never close,
From brothers of yours who have come bearing marvels.
فجازِنيso reward me بمديحيfor my praise أوor مديحِهِمُtheir praise
إنindeed المسبِّبَthe one who prompts it محقوقٌentitled بِتثويبِto reward
So reward me for my praise, or for theirs;
For whoever prompts it is entitled to reward.
سبِّبْprompt it أوor افعلdo it بلrather اسمحallow ليme بجمعهماto combine them both
فعلاًa deed بفعلٍfor a deed وتسبيباًand prompting بتسبيبِfor prompting
Prompt it or do it—rather, let me combine the two:
Deed for deed, and prompting for prompting.
ياO منone who يقولُspeaks بماof what فيهin him مُقَرِّظُهُhis panegyrist
ولاand does not يَمُتُّdraw close إليهto him بالأكاذيبِthrough lies
O you whose panegyrist speaks of what is truly in you,
And does not seek your favor with lies.
