    Keep from your scattered wealth

a share for the one who hopes in you.

It is neither just nor pious

    to see your petitioner slain.

If I die, I have no

doubt: I am a victim of your bounty.

    O sea, long has lasted

    my thirst upon your shores.

How much longing the eye beholds,

whose quenching lies within your streams!

My lord, how often I am driven

by my dignity from your watering places!

Every destitute man has now become

    wealthy through your bounties,

    just as every single man

    is destitute of your virtues—

save one freeborn man whom you denied

his due from your voluntary gifts.

He fears your generosity might reach

the very last of your treasured possessions.

    فأغِثْهُ بطائلكْ

    And he has nothing of worth;

so aid him with your abundance.

Do not blame him, for he

    is afraid of your fingers.

    He feared only your generosity,

    not your treachery.
