وتالٍand a reciter تلاrecited يوماًone day فأُنسِيَthen was made to forget آيةًa verse
فأعيتْso it proved elusive عليهto him حينَwhen رامَhe sought انتهازَهاto grasp it
A reciter recited one day, then was made to forget a verse.
It eluded him when he sought to grasp it.
فكرَّso he returned علىto ماwhat قبلهاcame before it متدبّراًpondering
فثابthen returned لهto him ذِكْرٌrecollection فأمضىand he completed مجازهاits passage
So he returned to what preceded it, pondering.
Then memory returned to him, and he made his way through it.
فشبهتُهُso I likened him بابنto a son of السبيلthe road تعرضتْappeared
لهbefore him وَهْدةa hollow فاستصعبتْand it proved difficult حينwhen رازهاhe tested it
So I likened him to a wayfarer: there appeared
before him a hollow, which proved hard to cross when he tested it.
تقهقرhe backed away عنهاfrom it قِيسَa distance of عشرينَtwenty خطوةًpaces
وجاشand he charged إليهاtoward it جيشةًin a single rush فأجازهاand cleared it
He backed away from it a distance of twenty paces,
and charged toward it in a single rush and cleared it.
