فَزِعْتَyou resorted إلىto الخضابhair dye فلمbut did not تُجَدِّدْyou renew
بهwith it خَلَقاًsomething worn out ولاnor أحييتَyou revived مَيتاa dead person
You resorted to hair dye, but did not renew
anything worn out with it, nor bring the dead to life.
فَدَعْهُso leave it ولاand do not تَعَنَّtrouble yourself بهwith it فُواقاًa moment
فأجدَىfor more useful منهthan it قولُكyour saying لوif وَلَيْتاand if only
So leave it; do not trouble yourself with it even for a moment.
For your “if” and “if only” would do you more good.
خَضبتَyou dyed الشيبَthe gray hair حينwhen بداit appeared لتُدْعَىso that you might be called
فتىًa young man حَدَثاًyouthful ضَلالاًin vain ماwhat ارتَجيْتاyou hoped for
You dyed your gray hair when it appeared, to be called
a young lad—vain was your hope!
ألاwhy not حاولتَyou tried أنto تُدعىyou might be called غُلاماًa boy
بحلقِby shaving العارضينboth cheeks إذاwhen التحيتاyou grew a beard
Why did you not try to be called a boy
by shaving both cheeks when you grew a beard?
رأيتكI saw you إذwhen كساكَclothed you الشيبُgray hair ثوباًa garment
تراهُsees it العينthe eye أسوأthe worst ماwhat اكتسيتاyou have worn
I saw you when gray hair clothed you in a garment
that the eye deems the worst you have ever worn.
أبتْrefused آثارُthe traces دهركof your lifetime أنto تُعَفَّىbe erased
بكفِّكby your hand شئتَyou wished ذلكthat أمor أبَيْتاyou refused
The traces of your years refuse to be erased
by your hand, whether you wish it or not.
