ليس على الضارِط تعييرُ

ليس على الضارِط تعييرُ

ولا على الضاحِكِ تغييرُ

ولا على الضاحِكِ تغييرُ

There is no reproach for the one who farts,

Nor censure for the one who laughs.

كِلاهُما أجراهُ مِقدارهُ

كِلاهُما أجراهُ مِقدارهُ

كرهاً وهل تُعصَى المقادير

كرهاً وهل تُعصَى المقادير

Each was driven by his allotted fate,

Against his will—and can fate's decrees be defied?

كم ضرطةٍ تتبعُها ضحكةٌ

كم ضرطةٍ تتبعُها ضحكةٌ

وما على الثِّنْتين تنكير

وما على الثِّنْتين تنكير

How many a fart is followed by a laugh!

And neither of the two is to be condemned.

كلاهما إن قيستا فلتةٌ

كلاهما إن قيستا فلتةٌ

حانتْ وللَّهِ تدابير

حانتْ وللَّهِ تدابير

Each, if the two are compared, is an involuntary slip

Whose time had come—and God has His designs.
