    Console me; I have grown weary of prolonged passion

    and of bearing sorrows and illnesses.

    Give me solace to drink; for if you cannot

    provide it, then cure me with wine.

    Perhaps there is healing in wine

    for lovers suffering heartache and passion.

    The intellect of the intelligent is powerless to do what

    others can accomplish through words.

    For me, beside the lady with the sidelock,

    there is no place to stay amid estrangement and disdain.

    فعلتْ فيَّ فعلَ كأسِ المُدام

    From her eye she has given me a cup of longing;

    it worked in me as a cup of wine would.

    It made me drunk as wine makes one drunk,

    and crept through my bones as wine does.

    كيف أرجو نقصانَ ما هو نامي

    Indeed, what cannot be is the waning of my longing;

    how can I hope for the waning of what is growing?

    Each day my longing and yearning grow,

    and my passion, my amorous longing, and my love-madness.

    There is no means to quell my

    longing except floods of freely flowing tears.

    فهْيَ عونٌ للعاشقِ المُسْتهام

    So seek help in tears, and turn to them for refuge;

    for they are a help to the lover maddened by love.

    If love is my ailment, then be certain

    that, ever since it came to be, it has been the ailment of the noble.
