I am jealous, though I have no wife—

rather, over the bounty in Ibn Khalaf's keeping.

    By God, if my hand

had power to undo a wrong, he would not blink again.

O my grief! If only saying 'O my grief!'

could heal me of grief's burning heat.

How can a freeborn, noble man not rage,

fierce in resolve, one who will not brook disgrace?

O sons of al-Abbas, you are a house

purified of every defilement and stain.

People have accused your sister on his account—

fool and sober man alike, in scorn.

They alleged, when they saw your sister

go to every excess on his behalf:

"This affair is open to reproach,

with only a thin, see-through veil before it."

And indeed they lied and spoke falsehood,

yet the arrow has flirted with the target.

So wash away the shame that has been smeared upon you

    with al-Khallal's blood—a gentle cleansing.

How my soul grieves that a barbarian like him

lives at ease, while you endure hardship!

And he has vessels of silver,

though once they were earthenware jars.

If you could see him, twisting his side,

leaning in the saddle from sheer conceit,

his nose held high in his arrogance—

so, if made to bleed from the nose, he would bleed vinegar—

your eyes would see in him a marvel,

making you forget every rare wonder.

We are alive upon the earth, and yet

Time has sunk us down, then sunk us down again.

The base man among us has risen high,

while men of eminence and honor have fallen.

My Lord, grant me justice against Time, for

I have no redress against it save through You.

So answer, O Lord, and have mercy on a prayer

from one anguished at heart, whose tears flow.

And grant us victory over an unjust age,

and hear us, O Lord, and exact redress

from a tyrant who, whenever we are gentle with him,

grows more oppressive and persists in violence,

like a seeker of blood vengeance who has missed

his chance for revenge, and so is left grieving.

People sink low while a certain crowd rises,

who have committed foul deeds on every side.

By my life, if we look closely at them,

they have not risen, but floated like corpses—

corpses floating on the sea of wealth,

while the treasures hidden in shells do not float.
