Did judgment fail, or did the messenger go astray,

though Shamul was there, and the wine?

I suppose judgment failed—but why, and how,

when that light knows no setting?

Just when you spread your bounty, has there left me

a noble loyalty of yours that never fails?

And has a countenance changed that no thought

ever led me to imagine would change?

O my hope, do you make a palm's hollow fertile

for a petitioner, while meeting you remains barren?

Truly, retaliation is a base disposition,

which your paternal and maternal kin disdained for you.

What have you to do with retaliation—may my life ransom you—

when your rank towers above competing with me?

You swore you would surely lavish gifts on me,

your resolve being kindness and faithfulness to your bonds.

Is it not within your bounty to combine kindness to me

with drawing me close, now that acceptance is assured?

Yes—and to grant me still more, as you are best suited

to do; your bounty bears out what I say.

    Noble roots guarantee it,

stirring you toward me, and gentle dispositions.

You may picture me saying, when there has reached me

your messenger, after a ghoul had waylaid him:

You began with people who are not dependents

of yours—if only you had begun with those you support!

Rather, humankind and jinn are all dependents

of yours, for you are the pouring rain.

Toward you the mounts convey the travelers,

and in your shelter humankind takes up abode.

    وكيف تريث عودةُ منْ يجولُ

    The seekers of your bounty seem to circle in an arena;

how could a circling man's return be slow?

Your outpouring of gifts brings them back,

and what pours from you there is no dust.

So let not the weaker among us be outstripped,

toward your bounty, by the strong and burden-bearing.

Were some people regaled, though they had surplus,

while we were left parched, with no surplus of our own?

Like the lamp of the noble Banu Buwayb,

Abu Hasan—may bereavement befall his hater!

    وكيف يُنافَسُ الحرُّ البذولُ

    Not that I would vie with him, a precious man;

how could one rival the noble, lavish giver?

A refreshment to a boon companion's soul, and a harvest

of pleasantries for which robes are trailed.

    To begrudge him his share

would be baseness of character—indeed, degradation.

But a place close to you is a prize

for which even just philosophers would act unjustly.

And some weak men like me were regaled,

but every one of them is shrewd and crafty:

such as Shahri and Ma‘shari in your company,

two spongers whose business is gatecrashing.

Whenever they wish, they make their rounds each day

where the ravenous glutton comes and goes.

And every young man with a brazen face

can drop in whenever he pleases.

    ودولتُنا بدولتكم تدولُ

    In our profession we are indeed one band;

our fortunes turn with your fortunes.

We are spongers: whoever's grounds we lodge in,

the mother of his food becomes a mother bereaved.

    But wicked partners betrayed me

and embezzled—may their embezzlement never prosper!

If they return to another trick like it,

grievances and blood-debts will be pursued.

I think they will be warned of hopelessness

by minds for which no minds would be exchanged.

If the chief again cheats me of my due,

I shall be angry, and my anger is a fearsome thing.

I am not like one who holds an obeyed pen,

before which infantry and cavalry take fright,

and a face like fortune's full moon at dusk,

with no curtains of night upon it.

    ولولا الظلم ما عذلَ العذولُ

    I reproached you for persisting in wronging me;

without injustice, no reproacher would reproach.

Yet I see that what you have obtained

comes back to me, on reflection.

If a night has seemed short to you,

it has not thereby seemed long to me.

    وبعضُ القومِ توبتُهُ خُتُولُ

    I hope for sincere repentance from you;

    some people's repentance is deceit.

I have given you this gatecrashing poem, which vies

with the sword's edge, never recoiling.

Had I wished, I would have called it a jealous woman,

whose grievance is your coldness, O fickle one.

It complains as a wasted sufferer's groan complains,

and tells what streaming tears have told.

If my presence is a heavy burden,

among the noble, burdens are borne.

No forgetting moves me to say, 'Set forth!

For the wind is fair, blowing from the east.'

And when our gathering-place gives us shade, you are

a guide to right paths, in whom the lost take refuge.

A fine trunk for wise counsel, to which we turn

    when other trunks are shaken!

    A mender whenever fissures open,

a cleaver whenever perplexities become tangled.

So take counsel with yourself for me; perhaps you will cleanse

your heart toward me—washing water does cleanse.

Another of my complaints is that I am alone,

while everyone else is a husband.

Money has made their women pregnant overnight,

while I spend the night with my wife a maiden, untouched.

I have no wife but wishes,

fed on promises, unimpregnated, raising her tail.

My heart among you is a captive bound to a captive,

bearing fetters of its attendant woes.

    ويدبِر والعيونُ إليه حُولُ

    It comes forward, and eyes look straight;

it turns away, and eyes turn askance toward it.

Alas for my anguish and my grief! Is one like me

a docile camel for every humiliation?

Must I turn my spear away from every rival

who has in his glance a deadly arrow,

striking my vital parts while my weapon is with me,

while you are present and I do not charge?

    وما ترك المداعبةَ الرسولُ

    I have taken a choice share of playful diversion;

even the Messenger did not abandon banter.

Now jesting has passed, and earnestness is due,

like a lion's earnestness when cubs surround him.

I am not threatening evil, but

thus do stallion camels let their throat-sacs hang.

    فلِمْ أمست تخالِطُها تُبُولُ

    I owe you blessings and benefactions;

why do grudges now mingle with them?

I have spread abroad that you are rainclouds

that pour generously yet leave no mire.

None of your clouds bears gloom,

and no wind of yours is a rushing, scorching gale.

I am indeed the man of many words in your praise,

and you are indeed the man of many deeds among us.

Why should I not speak, when they have yielded

to me, the young men altogether and the mature?

The white markings of a blaze-faced horse are prized,

but its white stockings rank below its forehead's blaze.

    فلا تَكُ كالخضابِ لها نُصولُ

    Your pledge is God's dye, freshly renewed;

let it not be like hair-dye, liable to fade.

Regard me with your glance, neither sharp

nor forced and marred with nicks.

Follow a gift with swiftly coming riches,

    for torrents follow rain.

Clothe me richly and grant me bounty, for I have

praise of you, swift-trotting and brisk-paced.

None can rival me but Zuhayr,

and he whom Hawmal and al-Dakhul made weep.

    I do not count my thanks and praise as favors;

yet are you ever bare of my praise's ornaments?

Are you not a wellspring of knowledge and kindness?

How, then, could any assailant undo your praise?

Gifts from which further gifts are sought,

and a mind from which other minds are drawn.

The Pleiades never rose as high as your ambition,

nor have ibexes found refuge like those you protect.

So grant me more closeness and a cheerful welcome,

    for differentiae follow the genus.

It is not obtaining what I asked that moves me; rather,

ruins are loved for love of their dweller.

Honor, or its opposite, has always been

branches through which the roots are discerned.

My share of communion with you is my true share,

but communion means actually reaching you.

    وفي الأحشاء لا الدارِ الدخولُ

    The face's welcome, not the doorkeepers', is admission;

entry is into the heart, not the house.

Obtaining a benefit is no obtaining at all

if the obtaining misses its true aim.

So give me your very self, and let it be revealed

    by manifest signs of honor.

In reproaching you, I have not thought your bounty slow

as the clumsy, impatient man does.

Nor have presumptuous demands crossed my mind,

as the foolish, ignorant man presumes.

Yet I see that seeking a way to you has become

feeble, or almost overtaken by futility.

Nothing strengthens it but a letter

containing a resolve that abounds in generosity.

I do not fall short in pressing my claim,

nor do you refuse or delay payment.

I am indeed the one succored when I fear,

and you are the helper, not the deserter.

I am the one overlooked when others are tended,

yet you yourself are not the heedless shepherd.

I kept your company, taking your countenance as my omen,

enough for me when omens become confused.

I did not read omens in the birds there, but

your good repute when the assemblies throng.

I hope from your bounty for a sea's overflow,

when the meager, dwindling trickle disappoints.

No hopeful man is deprived among you,

nor is the petitioner hated in your presence.

The noble virtues rejoiced that you were granted ascendancy,

as homeward return gladdens troops long held in the field.

    Your deeds are not contrived,

and my words in your praise are proclaimed.
