إنindeed أباAbu (father of) حفْصٍHafs سيستعديhe will seek redress
إن أبا حفْصٍ سيستعدي
علىagainst القوافيthe rhymes حينwhen لاthere is no مُعْدِيone to grant redress
على القوافي حين لا مُعْدِي
Abu Hafs will surely seek redress
against the rhymes, when none will grant it.
ياO لكto you منof أصلَعٍa bald man ذيpossessing هامةa pate
يا لك من أصلَعٍ ذي هامة
قدalready قَرَّعَتْهاhave made it bald خِلَعُrobes of honor القفْدِslaps on the nape
قد قَرَّعَتْها خِلَعُ القفْدِ
Oh, what a bald fellow you are, with a pate
already stripped bare by the honor-robes of nape-slaps!
زوَّجَهُmarried him to الدهرُTime علىdespite سِنِّهhis age
زوَّجَهُ الدهرُ على سِنِّه
زمرُدةًZumurruda صادقةtrue to الوعدِthe promise
زمرُدةً صادقة الوعدِ
Time married him, despite his age,
to Zumurruda, true to her promise.
فأخلفso recompensed اللهGod عليهِfor him بهاthrough her
فأخلف الله عليهِ بها
قرناًa horn مكانin place of الشَّعَرِthe hair الجعْدcurly
قرناً مكان الشَّعَرِ الجعْد
So God recompensed him through her
with a horn in place of curly hair.
