ولمand did not أجنحْincline إلىtoward حثِّthe urging of النَّديمِthe drinking companion
I drank the wine, delighting in it,
I drank wine at ease,
Nor did I rely on a drinking companion's urging.
And did not lean towards urging the cupbearer,

Diluted with water, it holds the soul's life,
Life of the soul shining through it,
And from it comes health for the ailing body.
And health of the frail body from it.

If ever worry kindles a fire within you,
If worries kindle a fire within you,
Then pour upon it some of the water of the vines.
Then pour on it some wine.
فلاfor nothing is أشْفىmore healing لدائكَfor your ailment مِنْthan شمولٍwine
ولاand nothing is أطفىbetter at quenching لنيرانfor the fires of الهمومcares
For nothing cures your ailment better than wine,
No medicine can treat your pain better than it,
Nor better quenches the fires of care.
Or extinguish the fires of worries.
