O you who accept our praise of yourself,

yet are miserly with your gifts,

you have wronged us, and were among those

who act unjustly in judgments and disputes.

We, at demolishing what we have built,

are abler than we are at building.

    Especially since praise is falsehood,

and truth lies in those hidden things.

Satire shall surely reach you, containing

    thunderbolts that outstrip death:

shameful faults whose telling brings no fear

of sin, nor misdeeds to guard against.

Verse will carry them through the lands,

its burdens borne by riding beasts.
