يا قمر الموكب والمجلسِ

يا قمر الموكب والمجلسِ

أفْطِر على القهوةِ والنرجسِ

أفْطِر على القهوةِ والنرجسِ

O moon of the procession and the assembly,

break your fast with wine and narcissus.

أما ترى مونقَ أنوارِه

أما ترى مونقَ أنوارِه

كأنه الأنوارُ في الحِندس

كأنه الأنوارُ في الحِندس

Do you not see the loveliness of its blossoms,

as though it were lights in pitch darkness?

سَقياً له إن ابتساماته

سَقياً له إن ابتساماته

تحكي ابتساماتِكَ في المجلس

تحكي ابتساماتِكَ في المجلس

May it be watered! Indeed, its smiles

imitate your smiles in the assembly.

ونشره نشرك لكنّهُ

ونشره نشرك لكنّهُ

دونك في الأصل وفي المَغرِس

دونك في الأصل وفي المَغرِس

And its fragrance is your fragrance, yet it

is beneath you in origin and in the soil where it grows.

وحقُّهُ الشرب على وجههِ

وحقُّهُ الشرب على وجههِ

مع السماع المعجبِ المنفِس

مع السماع المعجبِ المنفِس

And its due is drinking while you gaze upon its face,

with delightful, exquisite music.

اشرب عليه إنه مؤنسٌ

اشرب عليه إنه مؤنسٌ

وإنه في زمنٍ مؤنس

وإنه في زمنٍ مؤنس

Drink beside it, for it brings cheer,

and it is indeed here in a season of cheer,

في زمن الغيث الذي لم يزل

في زمن الغيث الذي لم يزل

يحكيك في الجود ولم أعكس

يحكيك في الجود ولم أعكس

in the season of rain that has never ceased

to imitate you in bounty—I have not reversed the comparison.

واسمع وأسمِعنا بما لم تزل

واسمع وأسمِعنا بما لم تزل

من شهرنا الظاعن في محبِس

من شهرنا الظاعن في محبِس

And listen, and let us hear, for you have remained

imprisoned by our departing month.

جزاك عنا اللَه من سيد

جزاك عنا اللَه من سيد

مثوبةَ المُربح لا الموكِس

مثوبةَ المُربح لا الموكِس

May God reward you on our behalf, noble lord,

with the recompense of one who brings gain, not one who brings loss.

فأيُّ أموالكَ لم تعطنا

فأيُّ أموالكَ لم تعطنا

وأي أنوارِك لم تُقبس

وأي أنوارِك لم تُقبس

For what part of your wealth have you not given us,

and which of your lights have you not shared?

أنتَ الذي قلتُ بآلائه

أنتَ الذي قلتُ بآلائه

علماً ولم أظنن ولم أحدِس

علماً ولم أظنن ولم أحدِس

You are the one of whose favors I have spoken,

from knowledge: I neither conjectured nor guessed.

زاولتُ تمجيدَك في ساعةٍ

زاولتُ تمجيدَك في ساعةٍ

فأيُ معنى فيك لم يهجس

فأيُ معنى فيك لم يهجس

I set about extolling you for a time;

so what quality of yours did not come to mind?

لكنني قصرتُ مستيئساً

لكنني قصرتُ مستيئساً

من نيل شأوٍ فائتٍ مُؤْيس

من نيل شأوٍ فائتٍ مُؤْيس

But I fell short, despairing

of attaining a goal beyond reach, defeating hope—

شأوَك إن الله أجراكَهُ

شأوَك إن الله أجراكَهُ

ومن يجاودْ ربه يُفْلس

ومن يجاودْ ربه يُفْلس

your goal, to which God has indeed sped you;

and whoever vies with his Lord in bounty goes bankrupt.
