والهمُّand sorrow عنfrom قلبيmy heart تَقَضَّىcame to an end ورَاحْand departed
He came and greeted me with a cup and wine;
And sorrow passed from my heart and departed.
وباتَand he spent the night يسقيserving الخمرَwine فيin رَوْضَةٍa garden
زَيَّنَهَاadorned it الورْدُroses وزهْرُand blossoms of الأَقاحْdaisies
And he spent the night serving wine in a garden
Adorned by roses and daisy blossoms.
ولمand did not يُشَفِّفfill to the brim ليfor me كؤوسَthe cups of الطِّلاwine
فقلتso I said ياO رُوحِيmy soul وزَيْنَand ornament of المِلاحْthe fair
But he did not fill my cups of wine to the brim,
So I said, “O my soul and ornament of the fair,
إنif كنتُI was قدْindeed عرْبدْتُI behaved riotously فيin سَكْرَتِيmy drunkenness
فَمَاthen no عَلَىupon السَّكْرانِthe drunkard أصْلاًat all جُنَاحْblame
If I behaved riotously in my drunkenness,
Then no blame at all rests on a drunkard.
أوor كنتُI was قدْindeed أخطأتُI erred فيin لفظةٍa word
فأنتthen you ياO مَوْلايَmy lord رَبُّmaster of السَّمَاحْgenerosity
Or if I erred in a word,
Then you, my lord, are the master of generosity.
فبالَّذِيso by Him who ولَّاكَgave you dominion فيin مُهْجَتِيmy soul

So, by Him who gave you dominion over my soul,
Serve me no cups unless they brim over.
ودَاوِand heal بالوصْلthrough union عليلَthe one sick with الهوَىlove
فَطَالَمَاfor so often أثْخَنَتْhave grievously wounded قلبيmy heart جِرَاحْwounds
And heal with union the one sick with love,
For wounds have so often ravaged my heart.”
فالحمدُso praise للهto God الذيwho قدْindeed صَفَاhas grown serene

So praise be to God, by whose grace serene has grown
Our gathering, with neither talebearer nor reprover.
فافترَّthen he parted his lips عنrevealing ثغرهhis teeth باسماًsmiling
فبانthen appeared ليto me الدرُّthe pearls بفيهِin his mouth ولاحْand gleamed
Then, smiling, he parted his lips,
And the pearls in his mouth appeared to me and gleamed.
