إذاwhen ماemphatic particle أخوa man of الخمسينfifty years أمَّلhopes for مثلهاas many years again
إذا ما أخو الخمسين أمَّل مثلها
فياthen, O ويحهwoe to him إنwhether خابhe is disappointed أوor أدركhe attains الأملْthe hope
فيا ويحه إن خاب أو أدرك الأملْ
When a man of fifty hopes for as many years again,
then woe to him, whether disappointed or attaining his hope!
هوit is الموتُdeath أوor نيلُattainment of التيthat which فيin منالهاits attainment
هو الموتُ أو نيلُ التي في منالها
ذهابُthe loss of الشبابِyouth الغضّtender واللهوِand merriment والغزلْand courtship
ذهابُ الشبابِ الغضّ واللهوِ والغزلْ
It is death, or attaining that whose attainment
means the loss of tender youth, merriment, and courtship.
