لعمريby my life لقدindeed عوَّلتَyou relied يومon the day تحمّلواthey departed
لعمري لقد عوَّلتَ يوم تحمّلوا
علىon هاطلٍa downpour منof دمعthe tears of عينكyour eye ساكبِstreaming
على هاطلٍ من دمع عينك ساكبِ
By my life, when they departed, you indeed relied
on a downpour of tears streaming from your eye.
فلمyet did not تَبْرُدِcool العينانِthe two eyes بالدَّمعwith tears حُرقةًburning anguish
فلم تَبْرُدِ العينانِ بالدَّمع حُرقةً
ولمand did not تُطفئاthey both quench حرَّthe heat of الهوىpassionate love المتراكبِmounting
ولم تُطفئا حرَّ الهوى المتراكبِ
Yet your eyes did not cool their burning with tears,
nor did they quench the mounting heat of love.
وأبرحand most agonizing شيءٍthing فُرقةٌseparation بعدafter أُلفةٍintimacy
وأبرح شيءٍ فُرقةٌ بعد أُلفةٍ
وفقدُكَand your loss of منthe one whom عُلِّقتyou were enamored of بعدafter التقاربِdrawing close
وفقدُكَ من عُلِّقت بعد التقاربِ
The most agonizing thing is parting after intimacy,
and losing the one you loved after drawing close.
