No one hoping in someone like you seeks another's aid against him;
how could he, when your justice is the balance among people?
أنتyou الذيare the one whose عدلتْestablished justice فيon الأرضِearth سيرتُهُconduct
حتىuntil تواردَshared a watering-place يعْفورٌa gazelle وسِرحانand a wolf
You are the one whose conduct established justice on earth
until a gazelle and a wolf drank at the same water.

What makes him fair to people, even against himself, is that he is a man
whom submission and faith make fearful of God.

Happiest are the people whose ruler has a scruple
that gives the rightful authority over him.

though age upon age has carried it onward?

in a year of drought, on earth as hard as smooth stone?

Has my sowing no season, that I may await it
until it yields, as other crops have seasons?

while Sayhan and Jayhan flow in your right hand?

What praise is due one who gives when his wealth chokes him?
Praise belongs only to a giver who is himself hungry.

praising you is an offering that brings one near to God.

A noble man may hunger long though possessed of abundance;
the self-restrained may remain unfed while starving.

Affliction finds relief after stretches of time;
time's tending brings both emaciation and fattening.

God has brimming buckets of His bounty;
everyone drinks from them, then drinks again.

If no trustworthy brother helps me against my time
among God's servants, then God is a mighty helper.

Take her, Abu al-Saqr: a virgin poem, richly patterned,
like a garden where arar and buttercups vie in height.

Remain safe and fortunate for those who hope in you, though dust soil
the noses and chins of those who oppose you.
