How can you put me off, when you are generous,

and gratitude is offered once and then renewed?

I think you deem too small, out of bounty,

a gift you can afford, and shrink back when solicited.

Do not scorn a small gift

that suffices: generosity with enough is sound judgment.

Especially when the excuse for making gifts small

is that your beneficence is offered and renewed.

By God, no humble gift is base from a giver

whose finest wealth has been exhausted by gifts.

One who gives the humblest of his possessions,

when he has nothing precious, is truly generous.

Do not forget that God has promised generosity

that reinforcements will not fail its devotee.

Whoever always makes beneficence his chief concern

finds upper arms strengthening his endeavor's forearms.

The noble man is he whose eyes delight

in wealth diminishing and glory increasing.

Many have seen every wind of fortune

in wealth torn down and praise built high.

    والموت أن تلْفى وأنت جمادُ

    Immortality is to be found giving and rising;

death is to be found inert.

    ومتى كنزت فللبقاءِ نفادُ

    Whenever you give, lasting life draws fresh breath;

whenever you hoard, lasting life runs out.

A man lives on after death through his deeds

forever, while Yadhbul and Nadad crumble.

So hold fast to your noble intention,

for, by your life, the promise shall surely be fulfilled.

And know that God, within His dominion,

never leaves a doer of good beyond His watch.

Whoever else has failed, none has failed who firmly believes

in kindness, sowing it and reaping it.

I left my family in your protection, and it

is a refuge and stronghold for those seeking shelter.

They have fallen into neglect, yet

    a man's family are his patron's children.

They requested their allowances and returned repeatedly,

until the repeated visits became hard upon them.

Their requests were thwarted, and they drew back,

like thirsty creatures circling water, driven off by warders.

So call their straying ones to you and quench their thirst

from a brimming pool that waters those who come.

    فلذاك عدَّك وحدَك العُدّادُ

    Carry their flotsam, as you carry their burden;

for that, the reckoners counted you alone.

For that you are called a giver who makes pleasant

his favors, when the churlish make theirs bitter.

For God's sake, care for my family: you are their protector.

Do not erect barriers against them.

Spare the weak women whose refuge you are

the burdens of hardship, for they are severe.

let your ever-arriving kindness come to them.

no blackness stains a generous man's white hand.

    فَيطَلُّ منه وادعاً ويُجادُ

    The cloud sends gifts to the distant one, succoring him;

at ease, he receives its drizzle and its downpour.

Still fitter is your bounty for one stricken by drought,

freely, with no saddle-frames strapped on for it.

    فاصطد فإنك للعلا صيّادُ

    Look, I have roused glory's wild game before you;

hunt it, for you are a hunter of glory.

I have awakened you to rare generosity, though

before my prompting you, you were never asleep to it.

Rather, you are fitter to awaken me

through ways of yours that are all right guidance.

    وابدأ فإنك بادئٌ عوّادُ

    So begin the noble deeds you have made customary;

begin, for you initiate and return again.

you have taught how the glorious are glorified!

what I have asked of you: glory is towering mountains.

I do lay heavy burdens upon you, because

I know you are a seasoned bearer,

and so that you may see my trust in your bounty, or

a company of base men may see how much you bear.

You shall surely attest that I trust you,

and witnesses shall surely attest your excellence.

O you whose loftiness friends oppose

always, whose glory loving friends resent,

in envy of one who, evening and morning, bears

    on his two shoulders what other shoulders cannot bear;

one who wrests from men the most precious glory,

    wearing mantles of its choicest stuff;

passionately enamored of noble deeds, enthralled—

neither Fartana nor Suad has enthralled him.

He rises healthy, so long as his giving

comes easily and his praise flows freely.

But when his bounty complains of giving's ailments,

that infects him, and visitors call on him in sickness.

His spirit grows sick, although it is sound,

    until wealth and the seeker return;

and a sting of shame appears upon him,

unless the seeker goes home enriched.

God be praised for your bounty, Muhammad! It

    rouses gratitude and grudges alike.

    فتلين ثَمَّ وتغلُظُ الأكبادُ

    You give lavishly and enslave our necks;

there they soften, while livers harden.

May the bounty in which you stand alone never fail

your two hands; for it, even single things have paired.

O you, in others glory is dispersed,

but in you even opposing glories gather.

If men are deemed his enviers and his enemies,

'enemies' wrongs them, while 'enviers' does them justice.

Who would oppose rain? And who is seen

as anything but envious when another outstrips him?

Your praisers find paths; there has always been

a path and open range for whoever seeks to praise you,

until, when he speaks of you, it is as though

all comparisons and equals have deserted him.

    وكرمت حتى استرغب الزهادُ

    Men grew mean and discouraged the hopeful;

you grew so generous that even ascetics yearned.

If the masters were like you in mastery,

promises would be fulfilled, and threats would fail.

Take it: you among men, and it among poems,

are of the choicest that critics appraise.

And if you have become, as named, Muhammad—the much-praised—

I, for what you have bestowed, am a tireless praiser.

And if I sought you, I did not seek you blindly,

by conjecture; rather, scouts had reconnoitered you for me.
