O Abu Sahl, yours is the praise that is heard,

and yours the bounty hoped for and sought.

And yours is the favor; I shall not deny it

so long as daylight appears and shines.

Yet, after all this, I will speak

the words of a loving adviser, if counsel helps.

    Yours is an honor unaccustomed

to showing any tarnish of reproach.

    وكذا العرض إذا العرض نصع

    And the slightest tarnish upon it is plain;

so it is with honor when honor shines pure.

And if you put a mote in a faithful brother's eye,

the mote is in you until it is removed.

And I am the intimate friend you chose,

who saw occasion for counsel and spoke openly.

No noble man would be content to give

    a bounty reclaimed every day.

Yours is a flowing bounty: whenever I say, “It flows,”

and long for it, I am told, “It has stopped.”

A joy from which sorrow is born,

and safety from which terror is reaped.

Each day it brings me fresh alarm,

yet a noble man's deeds should rather inspire admiration.

Do not be like Time in its deeds:

whenever it bestows its gifts, it inflicts loss.

I have no claim upon you except what

lofty virtues and high honors demand of you.

And the arbiter between us in this

is your nobility and your matchless generosity.

And I see the intercessor for its prompt bestowal

has grown slack, after once interceding.

I dislike a livelihood that follows,

whenever I hope for it, the course of temporary marriages.

Make the knot secure, if you wed me

to what you deem me worthy of—or else desist.

Be generous by sustaining what you set flowing,

or by freeing me from the bondage of hope.

And to a generous man who broke his pledge I said,

after he followed gifts with their withdrawal:

“Do not deal falsely over fleeting possessions,

for whatever of them comes to hand seems already to have flown away.

It is enough for one who cheats in his kindness

that this world's very certainties are deceptions.

A wealthy man merely wastes what he amasses,

and gains, in truth, what he bestows in kindness.”

Would that I knew: was it boredom brought on

by our long gathering when I stayed up with you,

or a glaring fault that appeared in me?

And good and evil traits reveal themselves in flashes.

Was it that or this that blighted what

I had hoped for, so it departed and dispersed?
