صَبرتَ فأخلف الملكُ المجيدُ

صَبرتَ فأخلف الملكُ المجيدُ

ألا فلْيهنكَ الخلفُ الجديدُ

ألا فلْيهنكَ الخلفُ الجديدُ

You were patient, and the glorious King granted a replacement.

Ah, may the new successor bring you joy!

صبرت على مَغِيبِ البدر حتى

صبرت على مَغِيبِ البدر حتى

أهلَّ أخوهُ واللّه الحميدُ

أهلَّ أخوهُ واللّه الحميدُ

You patiently bore the full moon’s setting until

His brother rose—and God is the Praiseworthy.

فذاك مضى لآخرةٍ وهذا

فذاك مضى لآخرةٍ وهذا

لدنيَا عمره فيها مديدُ

لدنيَا عمره فيها مديدُ

For that one departed for the hereafter, while this one

Is for this world, where his life will be long.

أبا عبد الإله ألا فشُكْراً

أبا عبد الإله ألا فشُكْراً

فإن الشكر يَتْبَعُهُ المزيدُ

فإن الشكر يَتْبَعُهُ المزيدُ

O Abu Abd al-Ilah, now give thanks,

For gratitude is followed by further bounty.

سَعِدْتَ سعادتين بغير شكٍّ

سَعِدْتَ سعادتين بغير شكٍّ

ولم يجمعهما إلا سعيدُ

ولم يجمعهما إلا سعيدُ

You have enjoyed two blessings, without a doubt,

And none but a fortunate man has combined them.

سعدت بأجرٍ ذاك وأنْسِ هذا

سعدت بأجرٍ ذاك وأنْسِ هذا

كذاك اللّه يفعلُ ما يريدُ

كذاك اللّه يفعلُ ما يريدُ

You are blessed with reward for that one and the companionship of this one.

Thus God does whatever He wills.
