Her gaze recoiled from a lover; made ugly in her eyes
Her eyes turned away from a lover, she denounced
were his charms, poor man, by the marks of his love.
His charms, the traces of his love made the poor soul less fair

بذنبكِfor your fault عاقبتِyou punished الفتىthe youth لاnot بذنبِهِfor his fault
Then her peers said to her when she turned away:
Her friends said to her when she turned away
For your own fault you punished the youth, not for his.
You have punished the youth not for his sins but for yours
هواكِlove for you الذيthat أبلاهُwore him out حتىuntil شنِئْتِهِyou loathed him
وحتىand until رأيتِyou deemed الموتَdeath عِدْلاًan equal لقربِهِto being near him
Love for you is what wore him out until you loathed him,
It was your love that afflicted him until you came to despise him
And until you deemed death the equal of being near him.
And until you saw death as justice for being close to him
وقدand perhaps تُسلميهِyou surrender him للمنيّةِto death بعدماafter
ذهبتِyou went off بحلوwith the sweetness of العيشlife منهfrom him وعذبِهِand its pleasant sweetness
And you may consign him to death, after
And now you would deliver him to death after
you have robbed him of life's sweetness and delight.
You have taken the sweetness and joy of life from him
