How many a man has swallowed hardship's draughts, knowing

that hardships clothe themselves in nobility!

O companion who accepted baseness as a companion,

and came to count his fellow diners as vipers!

    وأراك للبخل المُبيَّنِ حاتما

    For manifest generosity there was Hatim;

and I see you as a Hatim of manifest stinginess.

You loathed whoever ate food, for his saliva

is poison to you, so you treat no diner graciously.

Was it because I dipped my already-bitten morsel in sauce

that you began lampooning me for it, unjustly?

It is a fault, by your life, but I did not commit it

deliberately; count me as erring, not a wrongdoer.

And surely you, when you watched a fellow diner's hand,

are more deserving of satire and have more censurers.

Less of your revulsion at spittle, for many a time

your ass was fed on it, as you knelt or stood.

    والآن تُنْكَحُ في مشيبك غارما

    In your youth, you were always fucked for profit;

and now, in your gray years, you pay to be fucked.

Likewise, the man who hires himself out in youth never ceases

to have an ass forever paying back ill-gotten gains.

May God disgrace those men who were not free

of what disgraces them, yet reviled the blameless.

They sipped semen from penises, yet forbade

a friend's saliva when sharing food and drink.

Know—though your gross ignorance will not let you be seen

all your life as anything but ignorant, not learned—

    ولتنزعنَّ عن اعتدائك نادما

    that I have regretfully given up my easy familiarity;

and you will surely give up your aggression, regretful.

Were my saliva deadly like yours,

you would have found me alert, not asleep.

And I would have feared my Lord, lest I poison a monotheist

unjustly, and thereby incur everlasting torment.

But it is saliva whose purity I trusted,

with a trust you overlooked; so you flared up quarrelling.

Why did I not find you, at the first lapse

of mine, generous in pardon, or feigning generosity?

But nobility was denied to the base by the Ordainer

who barred secondary wing-feathers from becoming primaries.

So remain in your baseness as long as you live, for never

    can men's heels become skulls.
