until I made calamities his reckoner.

but asked his fate to discipline him.

Perhaps what bends him will become his straightening rod,

and perhaps what sickens him will become his physician.

O you to whom I sincerely gave my love

in all my circumstances, and whose beloved I was:

I shared his earnestness, and found him

In days when we roamed a single pasture

of learning, whose rarities hearts sought for sustenance.

whose clarity proclaimed its sweetness to those approaching it.

Does one I would never hurt cause me grief,

and one I would never trouble fill me with misgivings?

This is not how a friend cares for his friend,

his companion, his brother, and his kinsman.

Am I to compose verse whose like is never faulted,

only for you to be the first to fault its love prelude?

Not everyone granted a share of eloquence

is thereby made to forget his share of care for a friend.

Did you begrudge my twisting, in a time of need,

a rope to wealth, though I had not reached its well?

Indeed, I see you springing at me as I come to drink,

and whenever anything arises, I see you on its heels.

For a time you grazed on fertile land before I did,

while I grazed the barren ground of livelihood's pasture.

Yet I deemed all that paltry for you,

and was dissatisfied with your lot, belittling its ample share.

What you have shown testifies that you harbor hatred,

but my knowledge of you bids me disbelieve it.

When the judgment of one who errs arouses doubt,

his judgment's return to right guarantees that it will rebuke him.

I have lived believing that, if there appeared

a fault in me, you would never fault it.

I was told of a group whose fools reviled me,

and you attended their gathering and were its spokesman.

They faulted—and you faulted—speech without right,

which, however long you kept shooting, you could never hit.

And you objected that the opening of a poem

was my mention of a pampered one's bough and sand dune.

As though you had never heard of a maker of similes

before me, nor been accustomed to deeming him right.

The arranger of my speech knows nothing of its ordering.

till an inciter sets his little dog snarling at me.

Now, when I have outstripped every racer,

leaving his swiftest running a mere canter,

the pretenders presume to undertake my training.

Let whoever would inspire wonder dwell long on that wonder!

Grant the verdict was as you judged—was there not

in the pure milk of my verse enough to excuse its mixed milk?

Why, when you had been given a taste of my poetic gift's milk

and condemned its sour milk, did you not praise its fresh milk?

Rather, grant it an inexcusable fault—was it not

your friend's right that you protect him in his absence,

and be there his champion and his ally,

the adversary of his verse's detractor and the one to answer him?

But you were not content merely to withhold your support from him,

until you croaked the fool's own croak along with him.

You reviled a gifted poet's meaning and his words,

with abuse whose sequel you made just like its beginning,

till it seemed you meant to hold him back

from what he sought, and were seeking to thwart him.

Indeed, by what lies between you and me—it is

a covenant I have honored, far and near—

were I not loath to let my craving

to overpower and collar a friend rule my affection,

or to overstep the bounds of reproach,

and so become a friend's critic and the object of his blame,

I would have sent you a strange rhyme,

one ensuring exile for whomever it sent wandering.
