وهاذرٍand many a babbler يبلُغنيreaches me هَدْرُهُhis blather
لوif شئتُI wished عفَّىwould efface قطرَهhis drizzle سَيليmy torrent
And many a babbler whose blather reaches me—
if I wished, my torrent would wash away his drizzle.

والخيلُand the horses تُبقيreserve الجَريَrunning للخيلِfor horses
I set him galloping in his folly;
and steeds save their racing for other steeds.

محلَّلٌforgiven ماwhatever نلتَyou inflicted منof نيلِabuse
O blind man who has reviled me,
all the abuse you have dealt me is forgiven.

مدَبُّa trail ذَرّtiny ants فيin نقاa sand dune هائلshifting

a trail of tiny ants upon a shifting dune,
over which a gale has swept its trailing hem.

It has vanished; it cannot be traced
by Luqman’s eye, nor by Qayl’s.
لوif كانَthere were فيin شِلوكَyour carcass ليfor me مَبْطشٌa place to strike

Had your carcass offered me a place to strike,
your mother would surely have cried, ‘Woe!’
