    O giver of kindness to your enemies,

    All your life—to say nothing of your friends!

    And O brother and close friend of generosity,

    In all that cures it of its ailment,

    The fresh violet has come; bestow it,

    While it remains moist with its dewdrops.

    فجُدْ لنا أنت بإهدائِهِ

    The earth has been generous in making it grow;

    So be generous yourself: give it to us as a gift.

    And do not be stingier than a clod of clay

    That displays it in the season of its appearance.

    The earth is no worthier than a noble youth

    Of doing a kindness and bestowing it.

    And a noble man never interrupts, in any circumstance,

    His habitual bounty and beneficence.

    بَيْضاؤُهُ منه بسودائِهِ

    Nor are his favors followed—

    His white ones—by black ones from him;

    Nor are his gifts followed—

    The pleasant ones among them—by bitter ones of his.

    It is not right for one who has placed his hopes

    In someone like you to be repaid with refusal.
