By my life, you have indeed taken revenge on every molar

that wronged you by eating your loaves.

You found no stratagem against us when we wronged you,

so you fought us with the worst of your wine jars.

Wine from it set our teeth on edge, mimicking

the irritation your guests arouse in you.

We have returned it; save it for your vinegar stew

and for the calamities your days may bring.

And use it as a relish on your table,

for it is fitter for vinegar than for your friends.

Such is your staunch defense of your bread

alone; what, then, of your meats?

    Had we attacked the harīsa,

your sword would have reached our heads before your spearpoint.

We have taken a bite of you in jest,

in your own charming style and manner.

And we sought to put your forbearance to the test,

with no intention of humiliating you.

So leave off blame and reproach, for we are not,

if you resolve on combat, your equals.

Do not blame us: you are the apple of souls—

may your empty place never alarm them.

    Its fragrance, when inhaled, demands

a bite from the devoted among your friends.

Then, if provoked, take revenge on the sweetness of the roots

that watered your branches with charm.
