Tell a young man, forever enthralled by his looks,

    rather than by noble deeds:

The beauties of the face are no adornment

so long as you remain bound to misdeeds.

And the worst of misdeeds is your unsheathing, in

ignorance, a sword sharpened against you.

That is to make light of the weight of a young man

who has always been weighed alongside men of weight.

If you did not know what you had done,

then ask people other than yourself, who do know.

Your wearing out a freeborn man without reward

is an idea men regard as foolish.

The least a noble man owes someone

he denies a gift is not to make him taste humiliation.

And many a humiliation I suffered from you and

your lowly doorkeeper was anything but slight.

I swear you shall not escape my demands

so long as your tongue remains pledged.

So redeem the tongue you pledged, with a gift,

or with an apology, for you are no Qarun.

You resolved to deny me, yet keep raising my hopes,

and you are not safe from my censure.

So speak truth: I see that if your soul begrudges

the truth, you will come away the loser.

Nor fear that I will come to ruin if my mounts turn

away from you, for I am no madman.

Have you not seen how wide the roads are,

and that God lives and sustenance is assured?

Make plain the refusal you keep concealed,

for refusal is worst when kept hidden.

    لا تتركِ الداء فيه مدفونا

    And spit out from your breast what harms it;

do not leave the illness buried within.

Say: "Forgive me; I stumbled in keeping my promise."

My pardon will reach you, with no favor held over you.

Do not tell me "yes" while your resolve is "no",

lest poetry curse the accursed man in you.

I am a man: if my good auspices are sought

by a noble of his people, I become a good omen.

And if a base man seeks my ill auspices,

I become a stab and a plague to him.

Whoever soils his honor with promises and

their breach—I make satire his soap.

I do not shoot the arrows of rhyme

    at those with excuses for not giving;

but with it I always take aim

at those who make promises but give us nothing.

We give them renown and a banquet,

yet they raise our hopes and give us nothing.

They have worn us out weaving praise for them

and demanding our due, yet they give us no rest.

Those are the ones who testify that

they themselves are the wrongdoers and the blameworthy.

Many a man, lofty and proud in his prosperity,

whom misleaders had led astray before me,

I left as a peppercorn through satire,

when the hopes he held out had left me cumin.
