أباO father of الصقرthe falcon منwhoever يشفعseeks intercession إليكَwith you بشافعٍthrough an intercessor
فماليfor I have no سوىexcept شعريmy poetry وجودكand your generosity شافعُintercessor
O Abu al-Saqr, if others plead with you through an intercessor,
O Abu Al-Saqr, who can intercede with you as an intercessor
I have no intercessor but my poetry and your generosity.
For I have nothing but my poetry and your existence as intercessor
وجُودُكand your generosity يكفيsuffices دونwithout كلِّany ذريعةٍmeans of approach
إذاwhen لمnot تكنexist للطالبينfor the petitioners ذرائعُmeans of approach
And your generosity suffices without any means of approach,
Your existence suffices without any excuse
When petitioners have no means of approach.
If there are no excuses for the seekers
أتيتُكI came to you فيin عرضٍhonor مصونinviolate طويتُهI kept it folded away
ثلاثينthirty عاماًyears فهْوَso it is أبيضُwhite ناصعُspotless
I came to you with inviolate honor, which I kept folded away
I came to you with an integrity I have fostered
For thirty years; it is white and spotless.
For thirty years, so it is glaringly white
ومثلُكand one like you منone who لمnot يُلْقَis met فيin ثوبِa garment of بِذْلةٍeveryday wear
ولاnor مَلْبسٍattire قدalready دنَّسَتْهhas sullied it المطامعgreedy desires
And one like you is not approached in a workaday robe,
And the like of you has not worn the garment of humiliation
Nor in attire that greed has already soiled.
Nor a dress contaminated by greed
وحلَّأتُand I kept back نفسيmyself عنfrom شرائعَwatering places جمةٍmany
لترويَنيto quench my thirst مَمّاfrom what لديكis in your possession الشرائعthe watering places
And I kept myself from many watering places,
And I cleansed myself of the vile laws
So that the watering places might quench my thirst with what you have.
So you may quench me with the laws you possess
وأنتand you الذيthe one whose نادىcalled to المولِّينthose turning away جودُهُhis generosity
ودلَّتْand guided عليهto him الراغبينthose seeking favor الصنائعbenefactions
And you are the one whose generosity called to those turning away,
It is you who your generosity calls the givers
And whose benefactions guided those seeking favor to him.
And your favors guide the desirous seekers
وماand no قادنيled me ظنٌّsupposition إليكto you مشبِّهٌmisleading
ولكنbut يقينٌcertainty ثاقبُpiercing النُورِthe light ساطعradiant
And no misleading supposition led me to you,
And it was not an assumption that led me to you
But certainty, piercing and radiant in its light.
But an insight, piercing and radiant with light
فإنso if تفعلyou do الحُسنَىthe kindly deed فشكريَthen my gratitude راهنٌassured
وإنand if تكنِit is الأُخرىthe other course فعُذْريَthen my excuse for you واسعample
So if you show kindness, my gratitude is assured;
So if you bring about good, then my gratitude is there
And if it is otherwise, I have ample excuse for you.
And if otherwise, then my excuse is sufficient
