أرىI deem الصبرpatience محموداًpraiseworthy وعنهand away from it مذاهبٌalternatives
فكيفthen how إذاwhen ماemphatic particle لمnot يكنthere is عنهُaway from it مذهبُan alternative
I deem patience praiseworthy even when alternatives exist;
I see patience as praised, though there are dissenting views
So how much more when there is no alternative to it?
So what if there was no dissenting view?
هناكin that case يَحِقُّis warranted الصبرُpatience والصبرُand patience واجبٌobligatory
وماand whatever كانis منهof it كالضرورةlike a necessity أوجبُmore binding
Then patience is warranted, and patience is a duty;
Therein patience is warranted and obligatory
And patience that amounts to necessity is more binding still.
That which is like necessity is most obligatory
فشدَّso let him strengthen أمرؤٌa man بالصبرwith patience كفّاًa hand فإنهُfor it
لهfor him عِصمةٌa safeguard أسبابُهاits cords لاnot تُقضَّبُare severed
So let a man strengthen his hand with patience, for it
So one fortifies oneself with patience
Is his safeguard, whose cords are never severed.
It has impenetrable causes that cannot be breached

It is the saving refuge for one surrounded by
It is the refuge, saving those hemmed in
The hardships of time, from which there is no escape.
By the afflictions of fate, from which there is no refuge

I count virtues in it; no reasonable person
I count its means as something no reasonable person
Would wish to shun them, if they were fairly judged:
Could object to, if we judge fairly

A garment of beauty, a shield against gloating,
The garment of beauty is a shield against gloating
A cure for grief, for which one is praised and rewarded.
The remedy for anguish, for which one is praised and rewarded
فياthen, oh عجباًwhat a wonder للشيءat a thing هذيthese خلالهُits virtues
وتاركُand one who forgoes ماwhat فيهis in it منof الحظّbenefit أعجبُmore astonishing
How wondrous, then, a thing whose virtues are these;
So strange is this thing, these are its means
And more astonishing still is one who forgoes the benefit it offers.
Yet one abandons what fortune lies within it

People may suppose that their grief
People may assume that their misery
And their patience are a disposition built into them;
And patience therein is an inborn trait

And that neither is like something subject to control,
That they are not like other transient states
Which a sufferer directs when calamity strikes him:
Which one who suffers loss handles when he loses

If he wishes to grieve, grief obeys him,
If he wishes to be miserable, misery obeys him
And if he desires patience, patience comes to him, summoned;
If he wishes for patience, patience comes to him unbidden

بهwith it المرءُa person مَغْلوباًhelpless وكالشيءand like something يذهبُpasses away

But that both are involuntary, like something inflicted
But they are necessary, like things one is tested with
On a helpless man, and like something that passes away.
Vanquished, and things that pass

Yet they are not as people imagine them; rather, both
They are not as was assumed, but both
Are attainable by every discerning person and can be brought about.
Are achievable by every sensible person for a reason

يُرادُis desired فيأتيthen comes أوor يُذادُis driven away فيذْهبُthen departs
One of us, exercising choice, directs it: sometimes
The choosing among us handles them, so sometimes
It is desired and comes, or is driven away and departs.
It is willed and comes, or is refused and goes
إذاwhen احتجargues محتجٌa reasoner علىagainst النفسthe soul لمdoes not تكدcome close
علىagainst قَدَرٍa fate يُمنَىis allotted لهاto it تتعتّبُcomplains
When someone reasons with the soul, it scarcely
When one needing justification argues with himself
Complains of a fate allotted to it.
His soul cannot persist in what he wishes for it

And noble patience aids it; then there come
And beautiful patience assists it
To it, obedient to him, spare mounts led alongside.
Its afflictions voluntarily come to it to be avoided

تُقاتلfights بالعَتْبِwith reproaches القضاءَfate وتُغلَبُand is overcome
And if he feeds it false hopes, it never ceases
But if he encourages it with falsehoods it never stops
To fight fate with reproaches, and be overcome.
Battling fate and complaining
فَتُضحيso it spends the morning جزوعاًdistraught إنif أصابتْstrikes مصيبةٌa calamity
وتُمسيand spends the evening هلوعاًpanic-stricken إنif تَعذَّرَproves unattainable مَطلبُa goal
So it spends the morning distraught if a calamity strikes,
Thus it makes sacrifices if struck by calamity
And the evening panic-stricken if a goal proves unattainable.
And it ends the night distressed if its goal is blocked
فلاso let not يَعذِرنَّexcuse التاركُone who abandons الصبرَpatience نفسَهُhimself
بأنbecause قيلَit was said إنَّthat الصبرَpatience لاnot يُتكسَّبُbe acquired through effort
So let no one who abandons patience excuse himself
So let not one who abandons patience excuse himself
Because it has been said that patience cannot be acquired.
By saying that patience cannot be obtained
