إنif أَسْرِقِI rob الشعراءَthe poets شعْرَهُمُtheir verse

If I rob the poets of their verse,
it is repayment for the glory they stole.
سرقوكthey robbed you مجدَكyour glory وهْوَwhile it was مدَّخَرٌstored up
منْfrom قبْلِbefore أنthat تُلقىyou are laid إلىinto المهدِthe cradle
They robbed you of your glory while it lay stored up,
before you were laid in the cradle.
وكَسَوْهُand they clothed with it قوماًmen لاnot يَلِيقُis fitting بهِمْfor them
منamong ماجدa nobleman وَسَطٍmiddling وَمِنْand among وغْدِa scoundrel
And they clothed men in it whom it did not befit,
some middling noblemen, others scoundrels.
فرددتُso I restored حقَّكyour due غيرَwithout معتذِرٍapologizing

So I restored your due, making no apology
for it to any free man or slave.
