Were some people deluded by my keeping aloof from them,

and by my slackening their halters, so they breathed freely?

That is not because I am a target for every archer,

nor because my honor is a stump for anyone to rub against.

    فغيريَ من يمشي الضَراء ويهمسُ

    But I can shoulder the consequences of my wrongdoing;

so others, not I, walk through thickets and whisper.

My weapon is a tongue that cannot be blunted; my shield

is sound, smooth hide that repels disgrace.

So I do not spirit myself out of sight in fear,

nor lower my voice for anyone who listens warily.

I am Ibn al-Rukhami, whom you know:

a shining meteor, a rock that cannot be worn down.

My roar is my warning: flee before an onslaught

that shatters men's backbones and mauls them.

Leave those grudges alone while they lie buried,

and do not revive their ailments, lest you relapse.

And do not feel safe from me if peace is once concluded,

for savage war may wheel back and bite.

And in those I have branded you surely have a lesson

that brings you out of your heedlessness, wiser and more seasoned.

Take them as warnings before they seize you

with grief; indeed, guarding against evil is wiser and more prudent.

For the discerning, the staff was tapped long before today,

and al-Mutalammis said it before I did.
