    Tuesday—what a day Tuesday is!

At a lofty summit among the summits of days.

As though, within the week, it were the central pearl

In a strand of pearls adorning a beauty's neck.

God made the prince's Nowruz coincide with it

Only so that every joy might greet him that day.

Especially in a lush spring, abundant in rain,

That never ceases to follow rainstorm with rainstorm,

So much so that I likened its rain and its bloom

To Abu Ahmad's bounty or the brocade of Sana'a.

There remained no secret the earth had kept hidden

That she had not revealed after concealing it.

She displayed varied marvels among her bright blossoms,

Red and yellow, all sprung from dust-colored earth.

So rejoice in your Nowruz, whose ascendant is auspicious,

O son of the noblest, in ease and bliss.

And grant yourself that day your share of rest,

For eminence bears heavy loads and burdens.

It was a Magian festival, but it was ennobled

By your merrymaking that day—and you revel in no indecency,

But in things that stir the generous man

To generosity, so he lavishes gifts in the fullest measure.

Your right hand gave generously at Nowruz, overflowing

With wealth, while the people gave water generously that day.

May you never cease renewing Nowruz, whose reliance

Is on the pardon and forbearance within you.

We offered no gift, for people, since they grew discerning,

Have censured gifts except between equals.

For when slaves offer gifts to their masters,

They have overstepped and practiced usury to the utmost.

Except for praise, for I do not disapprove of it,

Or prayer for a giver of favors and blessings.
