لمdid not يزلcease للسَّكَنْجَبينِfor sakanjabin (sweetened vinegar syrup) قرينُa companion
إنif نأىhe goes far away عنهfrom it فهوthen he is صَبٌّlovesick حزينُsad
Sakanjabin has always had a companion;
The two sugar cubes were always a pair
if he is far from it, he is lovesick and sad.
If one was taken away, the other would be a sad lump
ولديناand with us سَكنجبينٌsakanjabin syrup وحيدٌalone
أنتyou عنديin my view بالأجرِof reward فيهconcerning it قمينdeserving
And we have sakanjabin, all alone;
And we have a single sugar cube
in my eyes, you deserve a reward on its account.
With you, its pair is certain
فاقرِنَنْso be sure to join بالسكنجبينwith sakanjabin syrup أخاهُits brother
إنهindeed it is لافتقادِهfor missing him مستكينdowncast
So do join its brother to the sakanjabin;
So pair the sugar cube with its brother
it is downcast for missing him.
It is miserable without it
والذيand what تستميحyou request as a gift غالcostly ثمينٌprecious
وثناءُand the praise الأحرارof noble men غالٍcostly ثمينprecious
And what you request as a gift is costly and precious;
What you gently decline is precious
and the praise of noble men is costly and precious.
And the praise of the noble is precious
ورجاءُand hope السماحof generosity فيin الناسpeople ظنٌّconjecture
ورجاءُand hope السماحof generosity فيكin you يقينcertainty
Hope of generosity in people is conjecture;
And hoping for generosity in people is an assumption
hope of generosity in you is certainty.
While hoping for your generosity is a certainty
والذيand what يُستقىis drawn as water منfrom النارfire غَوْرٌwater sunk beyond reach
والذيand what نستقيهwe draw it منكfrom you مَعينflowing water
And what is drawn from fire is water sunk beyond reach;
What is drawn from fire is embers
what we draw from you is flowing water.
What we draw from you is a spring
فاعذِرنَّاso pardon us علىfor انتجاعكseeking your bounty فيfor الحاthe needs (beginning)
جاتِneeds (ending) فالعُذرso the excuse عندat ذاكthat time مُبينclear
So pardon us for seeking your bounty for our
So excuse us for insisting during times of need
needs; at such a time, our excuse is clear.
For the excuse with you is evident
بدؤكَyour first gift الحرَّthe noble man حَرَّضَencouraged العَوْدَthe return منّاfrom us
وسماحِand the generosity الفتىof the young man عليهtoward it مُعينa help
Your first gift to the noble man encouraged us to return;
Your initial generosity incited repetition from us
and the young man's generosity helps us do so.
And the generosity of the noble makes that easier

جاتِneeds (ending) أنَّthat السماحgenerosity منكfrom you مكينfirmly rooted
And what spared us the dread of returning for our
It suffices us to shy from insistence in times of need
needs is that your generosity is firmly rooted.
For your generosity is assured
أنتyou منone who لاnot يُخافis feared منهfrom him اعتذارٌan excuse
عندupon عَوْدٍreturning ولاnor يُخافis feared يمينan oath
You are one from whom no excuse is feared
You are one who is not feared to make excuses
on returning, nor is an oath feared.
Upon insistence, nor feared to break an oath

لstinginess (ending) كميناًan ambush حاشاكfar be it from you ذاكthat الكمينthe ambush
And how often has a generous man secretly laid
And how often the generous one draws
an ambush of stinginess—far be that ambush from you!
From stinginess like an ambush, never from you that ambush

بُخْلِstinginess بالعَوْدby returning ثارerupted ذاكthat الدفينthe buried thing
And when one rouses in him the buried
So if the dormant stinginess in him is provoked
stinginess by returning, that buried thing erupts.
By insistence, that dormant arises
ذاكthat جودٌgenerosity لهit has أوانa season وحينٌand a time
ثمthen يمضيit passes فينقضيso it ends فيَبينso it departs
That is generosity with its season and hour;
That is a generosity that has a time and occasion
then it passes, comes to an end, and departs.
Then it passes and expires and becomes evident

And petitioners have tested your generosity; thus
And the beseechers tested your generosity so the flowing
all time is its season and hour.
Generosity, all of it is an occasion and time
