I rebuked two old callers to prayer over a brawl
They had leapt into together; even the upright may turn crooked.
فقلتso I said للأكبرto the older one الألْحىthe fuller-bearded هَباgrant, you two لكماto you both
هذاthis الأذانcall to prayer وهذاand this المذهبcourse الخطلُfoolish
I told the older, fuller-bearded one: “Grant yourselves
This call to prayer and this foolish course!”
فقالso he said نحنُwe ديوكroosters of اللهGod عادتُناour custom
أناthat we نؤذِّنُcall to prayer أحياناًsometimes ونقتتلُand fight each other
He said, “We are God's roosters; our custom
Is that we call to prayer at times, and fight.
لاnot سيّماespecially عندat خضبِthe dyeing by الشيخthe old man لحيَتَهُhis beard

Especially when the old man dyes his beard
And his head, while the old man's dye is fading.

We are truly roosters on that day,
When the redness of henna appears ablaze.
فإنand if أجدناwe excelled at سفادَmating with السانحاتthe available females لناto us
فثَمَّthen there تقوَىgrow stronger معانيناour qualities وتكتملُand become complete
And if we excel at mating with the females available to us,
Then our qualities grow stronger and become complete.
فاعذرْso excuse علىfor ماwhat ترىyou see فيناin us فخِلقتُناfor our nature

So excuse what you see in us, for our nature
Is cock-like, with no tainted part in it.

And among all roosters now there is a battle
That never ceases as long as camels moan.”
فقلتُso I said لاno بلrather يقولُsay القائلونَthose who speak لكمto you

I said, “No! Rather, people call you
Iblis's roosters—and sayings vie like arrows.
فيكمin you منof الشرّevil ماthat which يزريdetracts بخيركُمُfrom your goodness
فأينso where تذهبُdo you go عنهaway from it أَيُّهاO you الثَّمِلُdrunken man
There is evil in you that discredits your goodness;
Where, then, can you escape it, you drunken man?”
فقالso he said أخطأتَyou were wrong فالقَso meet الدينَreligion منتقلاًchanging course

He said, “You are wrong; then come to religion, changing course,
If you are turning away from what offends religion.
إنَّindeed الأذانthe call to prayer لَخيرٌis surely good عندَin the view of مسلِمناour Muslim
قليلهُa little of it لكثيرِfor much الشرevil محتملُable to bear
To the Muslim among us, the call to prayer is surely good;
A little of it can bear a great deal of evil.

بالصالحاتِthe good deeds وحكمُand the decree of اللهGod يُمتثَلُis obeyed
And good deeds, by God's decree, sweep away
Good deeds; and God's decree is obeyed.

إنif كنتyou are ممنamong those who بثوبin the garment of الدينreligion يشتملُwrap themselves
So call us by the better of our two names—it is our due,
If you are one who wraps himself in religion's garment.”
فقلتso I said أحسنتَyou did well بلrather أحسنتماyou both did well عملاًin deed
وقدوةًand in example وأساءَand did wrong اللائمُthe blamer العجلُhasty
I said, “You have done well—rather, both of you—in deed
And example; the hasty blamer has done wrong.”
وقلتand I said للدينto religion إذwhen أَكْدَتْbecame barren معادنُهُits mines

And I said to religion, when its mines had become barren:
“Bid Hurayrah farewell, for the caravan is departing.”
