وشَمولٍand wine أرقَّهاmade it delicate الدهرtime حتىuntil
وشَمولٍ أرقَّها الدهر حتى
ماnot تَوارىwas concealed قَذَاتُهاits mote بلبوسby a covering
ما تَوارى قَذَاتُها بلبوس
And wine that time has made so delicate that
With such perfection created by time
No covering conceals its mote;
That even its blemishes are concealed in beauty's gown
وردةِrose-red اللونin color فيin خدودcheeks الندَامىthe drinking companions
وردةِ اللون في خدود الندَامى
هيit صفراءyellow فيin خدودcheeks الكؤوسthe cups
هي صفراء في خدود الكؤوس
Rose-red in the cheeks of the drinking companions,
The rose hue on the cheeks of damsels
It is yellow in the cheeks of the cups.
Is yellow on the rims of cups
سهلةsmooth فيin الحلوقthe throats لاno غَوْلharm فيهاin it
سهلة في الحلوق لا غَوْل فيها
وهيand it خشناءrough صعبةunruly فيin الرؤوسthe heads
وهي خشناء صعبة في الرؤوس
Smooth in the throats, with no harm in it,
Smooth down the throat without deceit
Yet it is rough and unruly in the heads.
Yet harsh and difficult in minds
وكأنand as though الشعاعَthe radiance منهاfrom it علىupon الكفthe palm
وكأن الشعاعَ منها على الكف
فِcontinuation of 'the palm' جِسادٌsaffron علىupon مَداكgrinding stone عروسa bride
فِ جِسادٌ على مَداك عروس
And its radiance upon the palm seems
As if the rays from it on the palm
Like saffron upon a bride’s grinding stone.
