وكنتُand I used to إذاwhenever أنفذْتُI sent forth فيكَin your praise قصيدةًa poem
وكنتُ إذا أنفذْتُ فيكَ قصيدةً
فأنجزتُهاand I completed it استغفرتُI sought forgiveness from ربيmy Lord هنالكاthen
فأنجزتُها استغفرتُ ربي هنالكا
And whenever I sent forth a poem in your praise,
Whenever I would compose for you a poem
Having completed it, I sought my Lord's forgiveness then.
And complete its composition, I would then seek forgiveness from my Lord
فيحسبُso thinks قوميmy people ذاكthat منيon my part تأثُّماًrepentance for sin
فيحسبُ قومي ذاك مني تأثُّماً
ومنand out of خشيةِfear of التقصيرِfalling short أفعلُI do ذلكاthat
ومن خشيةِ التقصيرِ أفعلُ ذلكا
So my people think this is repentance for sin on my part,
For my people would think it was out of pretentiousness
But I do it out of fear of falling short.
Yet it was out of fear of falling short that I would do so
