وماand no سَيّرcirculated الهاجونthe satirists فيin الشعرverse خزيةًa disgrace
وما سَيّر الهاجون في الشعر خزيةً
لعمرُكby your life إلاexcept كانwas فيin النثرprose أسْيراmore widely circulated
لعمرُك إلا كان في النثر أسْيرا
And no disgrace have satirists spread in verse
The satirists have brought no shame to poetry,
That, by your life, was not more widely spread in prose.
I swear by your life, except being captive in prose.
وماand did not استطرفfind novel الأقوامthe people ليof mine فيهin it طُرفةًa novelty
وما استطرف الأقوام لي فيه طُرفةً
لأنيbecause I ماnot عرَّفتهمI made known to them فيهin it منكراanything unfamiliar
لأني ما عرَّفتهم فيه منكرا
Nor did people find any novelty of mine in it,
The people have taken no joy in me therein,
For I made known to them in it nothing unfamiliar.
Because I made no forbidden thing known to them therein.
