And among the wonders, O Abū al-Fayyāḍ,

is your exchanging welcome for rejection.

How grievous to me is what you have decided, for it is

an illness with which you have been afflicted.

I did not grieve because your injustice broke me,

but grieved for your broken judgment.

O you whose craft is calling others to nobility,

how utterly your two actions contradict each other!

Is it noble to abandon loyalty to a friend,

when your foul deed is no repayment for a loan?

How strange: one who spurs the noble toward that

in which he himself needs someone to spur him!

He described noble virtues, though indifferent to them,

and recognized goodness, yet turned a blind eye to it.

Never have I found so many corrupt men as among poets,

or such fierce reproach against the corrupt.

How many among them command a righteous deed

they never do, and urge what they themselves reject!

    Alas for a literary friendship,

from which we did not part by mutual consent.

    أعيا المشيبُ تتابعَ المقراض

    Reproach is useless with one who cuts ties;

gray hair has defeated the shears' repeated snips.

Now, after your treachery, my scout is certain

that lightning lies in its flashes.

Take with you whatever cords you have unraveled,

O master of breaking and undoing bonds.

In the wisdom time has imparted through you

lies ample compensation from you for one who takes it in exchange.

And affection is a due whose payment I have never found

readily obtainable by a claimant pressing for payment.

    فادفع أعنَّتَهُ إلى الرُّواض

    Wealth has bolted with you in a memorable rush;

so hand its reins to the trainers.

Oh, shame, if you find wealth too much to bear

when you don its loose-fitting shirt!

    You have ranked your worth below what you were given to own;

there is no injustice—you are its fairest judge.

Why should we resent, for your sake, a detestable course

when you remain content with it for yourself?

Because you have harvested the fruits of the noble, do you meet me

with the white snake's scowl as it sheds its whiteness?

O gatherer of fruit delicious to taste,

why do I see you like someone eating sorrel?

Do not grow vain over what you possess, for you were not

before it a worthless wretch among the worthless.

Abū Shurāʿa's grave had already given you leave

to boast of his overflowing sea.

You have shown me arrogance's pregnancy; now shoulder

a load that will keep you in labor through the night.

And I have not yet lampooned you, but admonished you, for I

do not treat people's honor as targets.

So hold your arrows back from your brother: it was only

because you angered him that he shot you with a blunt arrow.

And whenever you lampoon someone who reproaches you fairly,

he has a keen-edged resolve to lampoon you.

And know that if you approach what

you were restrained from, you come to the worst of watering pools.

And whenever you breathe out a whiff of satire,

its allotted share will overwhelm the reckoners of inheritance.

    كلّا ولا الواني عن الركَّاض

    I am not forbearing toward the fool, that brother of obscenity;

no indeed, nor do I lag behind a tireless runner.

Battles have proved me a valiant man,

on whom time has left the scars of biting.

I am one who deems the cautery the mildest of his salves,

and matches sweet grazing with sour grazing.

    ما أبعد المكْوَى من الخضْخاض

    So let the scabby be cured, for I am not like those they have met;

how far the cautery is from liquid tar!

I am the one you have heard of; you know enough

of your brother, that binder and unraveler.

    ومتى جهلتُ مُنيتَ بالبرَّاض

    So whenever I am forbearing, you meet the Aḥnaf of his age;

and whenever I act rashly, you are afflicted with al-Barrāḍ.

So excuse your brother for his threat, for I have only

warned before shooting by twanging the bowstring.

I have warned of my arrows: if they are loosed,

they will leave no shred of honor remaining.

And know—may you be spared ignorance—that baseness is

arrogance in wealth and abasement in destitution.
