واترٌa wrongdoer ظالمٌunjust وناقضand one who redresses وتْرٍa wrong
أيُّwhich هذيْنthese two يستحقdeserves الندامَهْregret
An unjust aggressor and one who redresses a wrong—
A tyrannical and unjust aggressor,
Which of these two deserves regret?
Which of these two deserves regret?
أحليمٌis it a forbearing man? أصابَdid harm منهto him سفيهٌa fool
فاستردَّso he reclaimed الحليمُthe forbearing man منهfrom him الظُّلامَهْwhat was wrongfully taken
Is it a forbearing man whom a fool wronged,
A forbearing one who was wronged by a fool,
Whereupon the forbearing man reclaimed his due from him?
So the forbearing one took back his injustice,
أمor سفيهٌa fool أصابَassailed عِرضَthe honor of حليمa forbearing man
فأصابَso encountered السفيهthe fool طفْرa leap عُرامهْferocity
Or a fool who assailed a forbearing man's honor,
Or a fool who dishonored a forbearing one,
And so encountered a leap of ferocity?
So the fool earned humiliation and disgrace,
خالدَO Khalid اللُّؤْمِbaseness أنتَyou هيَّجْتَyou stirred up حَرْبيmy war
ولقدand indeed كنتَyou were وادعاًat ease فيin سلامهsafety
Khalid the base, you stirred up my war,
O Khaled, igniter of wars against me,
And you had indeed been at ease in safety.
You were once peaceful and calm,
فاشتريتَso you bought السهادsleeplessness بالنومِwith sleep جَهلاًout of ignorance
ورئمتَand you embraced الهوانhumiliation بعدَafter الكرامهhonor
So, in ignorance, you bought sleeplessness with sleep,
You foolishly bought sleep with oblivion,
And embraced humiliation after honor.
And disliked dishonor after honor.
