If my patience for immediate gain

is a portion of my patience for deferred gain,

then why do I abandon what never passes away,

and labor for fleeting worldly goods?

Shall I endure this entire span

for no great reward or benefit,

yet be unable to endure many times as long

for what lies beyond the hopeful one's hope?

I would then testify that I am a fool,

and that I am not a man of sound judgment.

A precious thing is sold for something less,

to favor an advance received at once.

What excuse has one who sold the finest fortune

at a loss to one who shortchanges and stalls?

Shall I abandon my hereafter in folly,

and serve my worldly life through falsehood,

and anger my Lord while pleasing His servants,

    without recompense or any gift?

I would then testify that I am ignorant

of my own good, and worse than an ignorant man.

    لُ وَحَسْبُك بالدهر من غائل

    O Abu Ahmad, this delay has dragged on;

and time is assailant enough for you.

So fulfill your promises, or give me

safety from the calamity that descends.

Remember how many a panegyric I have,

in whose sweeping train I galloped!

And how many a robe have I clothed you in,

in which you walked with a proud, robe-trailing gait!

And how many rainless flashes of lightning are yours—

    deceitful—and how many barren promises!

Breath blown through a reed is stored in a wineskin,

    but your promises yield nothing.

And even if they were not barren and sterile,

they would have exceeded a pregnant woman's term.

I gave you my praise, but you did not reward it.

Alas, my efforts as a worker came to nothing!

It is as though, in everything I said,

I sowed pebbles in hard, smooth rock.

I returned to the bounty of one whose bounty

extends to humankind, jinn, and the maddening demon.

    I handed my tongue to a sword-polisher,

and entrusted my honor to a washer.

And how many an obscure man I had brought to notice,

and how many an unadorned man I had adorned!

Were I enamored of the bounty of your hands,

it would be time for me to forget, with those who forget.

When a panegyrist praises the deficient,

    he reminds them of the excellent man's triumph;

thus he offers them praise that brings regret,

because they fall short of the perfect man's reach.
