ليI have ابنson عمٍّa paternal uncle يجرُّdraws الشرَّevil مجتهداًstriving diligently
لي ابن عمٍّ يجرُّ الشرَّ مجتهداً
عليَّupon me قدماًall along ولاand not يصلىhe burns in لهfor it ناراa fire
عليَّ قدماً ولا يصلى له نارا
I have a paternal cousin who zealously draws evil
My friend brings harm and toils day and night
Upon me all along, yet never burns in a fire for it.
He wrongs me though no fire consumes his plight
يجنيhe does wrong فأصلَىso I burn بماfor what يجنيhe does wrong فيخذُلُنيthen he abandons me
يجني فأصلَى بما يجني فيخذُلُني
وكلماand whenever كانhe was زنداًa fire-stick كنتI was مسعاراa fire-poker
وكلما كان زنداً كنت مسعارا
He does wrong, so I burn for what he does; then he abandons me.
He reaps as he sows, so I pray as he reaps
And whenever he was a fire-stick, I was the fire-poker.
The more lively he seems, the more kindling I keep
