خذ العفو واصفح عن أخٍ بعض عيبه
إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle بداappears وارفقand be gentle بمنwith the one whom أنتyou غامزُare criticizing
إذا ما بدا وارفق بمن أنت غامزُ
Accept what comes readily, and overlook some of a brother’s faults
Forgive a brother's faults, and overlook
When they appear; be gentle with the one whose faults you criticize.
His flaws, when they appear. Be gentle to
فإنfor if هوhe أدىfulfilled بعضsome of حقكyour due فارضهthen be content with him
فإن هو أدى بعض حقك فارضه
فليسfor ... is not بمغبونٍshortchanged أخٌa brother متجاوزone who overlooks faults
فليس بمغبونٍ أخٌ متجاوز
For if he fulfills some of what is due to you, be content with him;
The one whom you reprove. Though he withhold
For a brother who overlooks faults is not shortchanged.
Some of your rights, let them not trouble you.
ولاand do not تحتقرdisdain للدهرfor days to come كنزاًa treasure تُعدُّهُyou prepare it
ولا تحتقر للدهر كنزاً تُعدُّهُ
فقدfor ... may يكنِزُstore up المنزورَa scant amount للدهرfor days to come كانزone who stores treasure
فقد يكنِزُ المنزورَ للدهر كانز
And do not disdain a treasure you prepare for days to come;
Do not despise the treasures of this life;
For a saver may store up even a scant amount for days to come.
The scorned may be the seeker's prize one day.
طلبتَyou sought فأعياكbut eluded you الكريمُthe noble person غرائزاًin innate dispositions
طلبتَ فأعياك الكريمُ غرائزاً
وأيُّand who سليمٍone free of flaws حينwhen تُبْلَىare tested الغرائزinnate dispositions
وأيُّ سليمٍ حين تُبْلَى الغرائز
You sought one noble in disposition, but he eluded you;
You seek, but the noble one eludes your strife;
And who is unblemished when dispositions are put to the test?
What mind stays sound when impulses decay?
Sol 6.1
