She of the sweet front teeth wrote,

Complaining to me of my long avoidance.

And the messenger came to me with words from her

She had not set down in the letter's lines:

'O cruel one, through whom God has decreed

    My long torment among humankind,

If you knew the sickness in my body

And love's affliction, you yourself would be my answer.'

So I braved the terror to reach her, while the guards

Had dozed off at the doors.

She was among bareheaded women who had not

Kohled an eyelid with sleep, awaiting me,

Looking down at me from the palace balconies,

    Wary of the doorkeeper's watch.

And among them her talk was of me,

Mostly: 'Would that he took pity on what ails me!'

I paused a while, then called out:

'Peace from me to my loved ones!'

They rejoiced together at my coming and looked out toward me,

    With gasping, sighing, and sobbing.

Then she said: 'Have you not feared the God

Of humankind, in so long forsaking and avoiding me?

My side indeed shuns the bed,

Like a sore-chested camel holding itself off the rocky knolls.'

And we parted with promises; they soothed

With them a searing pang of suffering.
