أباO father of حسنHasan إنّindeed حبلthe cord of المِطاdelay (continued on line 2)
لِending of 'delay' إنif مُدّis stretched كانit becomes بلاwithout آخرِan end
Abu Hasan, indeed the cord of delay—
Abu Hassan, the rope of patience
if stretched, has no end.
Is not endless, it has an end
فإماso either اصطنعتَyou bestowed a favor إلىupon شاكرٍone who is grateful
وإماor else اعتذرتyou offered an excuse إلىto عاذرِone who accepts excuses
So either bestow a favor upon a grateful man,
Whether you are kind to the grateful
or offer an excuse to one who will accept it.
Or apologize to the blamer
ولاand no عذرexcuse إنif أنتyou خاتلْتنيyou deceived me
عنaway from العذرthe justification فعلَin the manner of امرئٍa man ماكرscheming
And there is no excuse if you trick me
There is no apology if you have betrayed me
out of my justification, as a scheming man would.
That is the act of a deceitful man

حَدانيdrove me onward الملالُweariness معwith الصادرthe departing traveler
For if you persist in delay until the time when
If you keep delaying until
weariness drives me off with the departing traveler,
Boredom and frustration overcome me
وجاءكand reached you عنيَfrom me ماwhat لاnot تحبْyou like (continued on line 10)
بُending of 'you like' منof قَذَعٍscathing abuse مُنجِدtraveling through highlands غائرtraveling through lowlands
and what you dislike reaches you from me—
And you hear from me what you don't like
scathing abuse ranging over highlands and lowlands—
In the words of a desperate angry man
وقلتُand I said لأولto the first مستخبِرinquirer
وقفتُI stood علىat طللa ruined campsite داثرeffaced
and I tell the first inquirer:
And I say to the first inquirer
'I stood at an effaced ruin;
I stopped at ruined ruins
رحلتُI set out علىupon أملٍa hope بادنٍfat
وأand … (damaged verb fragment) ت… (apparently part of 'I returned') علىupon أملa hope ضامرlean
I set out upon a fat hope,
I travelled with feeble hope
and [returned] upon a lean hope,'
And returned with fading hope
طفقتyou began تؤنبنيyou reproach me سادراًheedlessly
لتُلزمنيto saddle me with الذنبthe blame فيin الظاهرoutward appearance
you begin heedlessly to reproach me,
You started blaming me excessively
to pin the blame on me in outward appearance,
To make me seem guilty outwardly
وقلتَand you said امرؤa man خانهbetrayed him صبرهُhis patience
وقدthough indeed طالhas lasted longer صبريmy patience علىbeyond الصابرthe patient man
and say, 'A man whose patience betrayed him!'
And you said, a man failed his patience
though my patience has outlasted the patient man's.
Though my patience on the patient was long
فلاso do not تذهبنever resort إلىto هذهthis

فلستَfor you are not لعقليَagainst my wits بالقامرa winner at gambling
So do not resort to this,
So do not go down this path
for you will not outgamble my wits.
For you cannot comprehend my mind
وقدand perhaps يُسرقis stolen العذرthe justification منfrom مفحَمٍone unable to compose verse
ولاand not يسرقis stolen العذرthe justification منfrom شاعرa poet
And a justification may be stolen from a non-poet,
An excuse can be stolen from the stumped
but no justification can be stolen from a poet.
But an excuse cannot be stolen from a poet
